Building a Cozy MK IV Bulkheads

Chapter 4

Bulkheads and Seat Back

I started this chapter 05/06/09 and finished it on 06/16/09. In chapter 4 you begin building aircraft parts. The previous chapters are all training. In this chapter you will build bulkheads, the front seat back and firewall.
I started this chapter weighing every batch of epoxy on a scale. This was very time consuming and I wasted quite a bit of epoxy. Next I bought an epoxy ratio pump which made things go a lot smoother.
I started construction on the airplane by tracing the templates onto the foam and cutting the parts out. Next I applied slurry, a mixture of epoxy and glass microspheres, onto the foam. I then wet the fiberglass with L335 MGS epoxy to each layer of fiberglass while maintaining the correct fiber orientation. After the epoxy set up I used a Fein Multimaster tool to cut the excess fiberglass off around the edges. Below are some pictures of the bulkheads, firewall and seat back. The edges of the parts still need to be sanded.

This picture shows how I used the router to clean up and straighten the edges of the instrument panel.

This picture shows the landing gear bulkheads with their hard points installed and ready to be fiber glassed.

This is a picture of the firewall being fiber glassed. I am now ready to start on Chapter 5.
