Hangar Flying / Painting
« on: August 24, 2007, 12:48:49 AM »
Bruce,

Thanks for your response.  I seem to remember some guys saying to make sure the resin is stored warm enough ! !   One guy I know keeps his in a cabinet with a light bulb in it ! !   But, . . that could have been in the winter,  I don't remember.

As for the quantity,  you mentioned that one cannot mix big batches, . .but the article I read from George, . . ( Russian I think, last name ) said to mix it in a large salad bowl ! ! ! That would be enough to do the whole wing ! !

I'm wondering if he's using different materials than I am.

Waiter,

Or anyone else who might know.

I read the article from the Canard Zone about finishing a plane.  The author makes the point that the whole wing should be done at one time rather than just doing spots here and there and sanding your life away.  I would like to do larger sections, but my poxy sets up too fast.  I can't get that large a batch mixed and applied before it sets up.  I'm using the West system, 105 Resin, 206 (slow) hardner.  I can't get much more than three squirts mixed with micro before it starts getting too stiff to spread.  Is there a different hardner that would allow more time to apply ?

Thanks for your response.

Mr James ! !

Is it really you ?  Emerging from the foggy abys ? ?

Mine is nearing completion too.  Since I have been over every little detail, I'm not as concerned.  Perhaps I should have more " over the shoulder " help.

One other thing to check.  Are you sure your calipers are fully releasing ?  If you just put in all new, .. you wanna make sure it turns free. Otherwise you may be creating heat just while taxiing.

Sounds like you warped your rotors.  If it were me, .. I'd check into having the rotors turned.  The manufacturer usually has specs as to the minimum size the rotors can be turned down to before they must be trashed.  You may already know this, but that's the way I'd go.  Venting might help, I don't know.  Someone else might.  Is there a reason you had to brake heavy ?  Will this be common practice ?

Hangar Flying / Wing Painting

Thanks guys for the response.

Steve,

I'm not sure what the simpson post hole thingie is but I basically got the concept.  I hadn't thought of reinforcing the position light hole.  I ran a solid steel rod 1/2"  by about 24"  down that hole.  I was afraid of damaging the wing.

Bruce,

As for the hole near the winglet,  I don't have one yet,  do plan to drill one,  but I don't think it would work to have something in there while I'm trying to paint.

I have a long-ez.

Thanks  Gents.

Anybody have any ideas as to how to hang a single wing for painting ?

I'm painting mine in pieces, and starting with the wing, but how do you hang it ?

I took a two foot rod and put in down the wiring chase in the front side of the wing, and plan to hang the other side on a couple bolts in the bolt holes.  I hope it's not too much stress on the forward side of the wing in the chase ! !

For Sale/Wanted / exaust pipes
« on: August 06, 2007, 08:53:00 AM »
I have a set of exaust pipes that will fit your O-320.

They are two into one with tapered outlet and have a heat muff on the starboard side.  I'll take $200.00 for them.   See pics.

For Sale/Wanted / Auto pilot

Just a couple more things to add :

First,  I did connect power to it and the gyro does run.  When you bank it you can see the LED's light up to indicate a turn.  I'm not sure it worked both directions though.  It has a 9 pin connector plug instead of the 12 pin currently used.

For Sale/Wanted / Navaid devices Autopilot
« on: August 01, 2007, 03:53:33 AM »
Anybody interested in a Naviad Auto pilot head?

It came with my bird when I bought it but had no servo.  I bought the servo for it, but it didn't work properly.  I contacted the factory and I think they said they could get it working.  It has the turn coordinator indicator bars on it.  This is one of the earliest models.  Serial number 69.  I have the manuals for it.

I bought a new trio auto pilot head since it also uses the navaid devices servo.

I think the head cost around $400.00 - $600.00 or so new.  I would take much less than that for it.  Basically any amount just to get it off my precious shelf ! !

Hangar Flying / Nose light
« on: August 01, 2007, 03:40:36 AM »
I'm thinking of mounting my landing light right in the very front of my nose.

I remember reading an article by the infamous " Wild Bill James " from Texas, . .in which he references a conversation he had with an aerodynamicist. He had asked the dude " Should my nose be pointed or rounded ? "  The answer was : . .( another question ).  Will you be super or subsonic ?  Answer : Sub. :  subsequent answer :  Make it rounded.  So if you check out Bill James' EZ, . . .you'll see that his nose resembles a basketball.

SO . . . . all that to say . . .that it appears it is not critical to be pencil sharp pointy on the nose, . .so I am thinking about puting my landing light right out in front, and putting my petot tube out diagonally and then bent forward like you see on the military jets.  There it will have excellent visibility and also cooling.  If you use the mega expensive Xenon light, it should cool nicely.  Now, . .gotta figure out how to mount and aim the thing.

Hangar Flying / Naca scoop
« on: August 01, 2007, 03:31:53 AM »
Don,

The NACA scoop is indeed " notched " into the bottom of the fuselage.  The bottom of the fuselage is the level " plane " from whence the scoop takes it's air.  This scoop protrudes through the firewall.  Some guys choose to use a " P - 51 " type scoop instead.  This scoop protrudes down and forward into the slipstream.

Best to peruse some photos if you can.

Hangar Flying / Panel
« on: July 19, 2007, 12:35:15 AM »
Nice looking panel ! !    That must be the new  7"  EFIS.  Boy that sure sucks up a lot of real estate ! !

Only comment I would make is, that heavy, and bulky ignition switch.  I got rid of mine and put in a couple toggles.  Also might find another place for the hobbs.  Not mission critical on the panel.  Now that you've got it done I can pick on it ! !

Good luck.  It's a nice clean looking panel ! !

Best answer :  B & C will have the best info on that question.  They deal with it all the time and they are sharp ! !

My guess is just about the best conductor you can buy is copper, . .that is without going to precious metals. ( gold, silver, etc. )  These days though,  you might add copper to that list ! !    Price of copper keeps climbing.  As for the guage,  the regular automotive size should be adequate.  Regular as in full size Chevy like.  Not a little Toyota or Honda.

Again,  B & C are the best at this stuff.  I assure you,  they'll be your best source for info.
