Step 8: Oil Cooler
I bought a 13-row oil cooler from Aero Classic. It sure is a big sucker! I haven't a clue yet as to where I'll mount it. The plans offer two suggested locations -- one on the top cowl near the firewall and one in the wing root of the lower cowl. I don't really like either location, although many builders say they have better cooling luck with the cooler mounted in the wing root rather than on the firewall exiting out the top cowl.
My location will all depend on my updraft versus downdraft decision. I'd really like to mount it just under and between the alternator and starter. In this way, the cooling air through the oil cooler will exit directly aft with little change in direction. I need to size up that location to see if there's enough room for mounting it there.
