Hey there... I put money down on a P-mag about 6 months ago...then asked to be put at the bottom of the list while they worked out issues.

I have just been sent a letter stating that they would like to fill me order.

Does anyone have any "Fresh" experience with this product?

Thanks in advance.

(It has been nice flying weather in western Oregon for the last few days. Spent our few hours combing the snowcovered Cascades and down low on the beach this last week... We are lucky people!)

I found this on the emag site. And am wondering if this was an issue in our planes because of the long wire run?

Thanks,

Dave

A percentage of customer reported an occasional high speed miss.  This was eventually traced to voltage shifts on the 12 volt supply buss.  It’ was not so much the amount of voltage change as the rate of change that caused a momentary advance or retard of ignition timing before E-MAG’s automatic dwell compensation was able to react.  The symptom is buffered to a large extent by the ignition’s onboard capacitors.  But a combination of a) longer wire runs, b) lighter gauge power wire, c) load from the ignition (rpm), and d) the size and rate of voltage shifts all work against this buffer.  These are conditions unique to each installation.  The pattern had not presented on our test bench, our test engine, or on any of the local customer installations, so it was tough to trace down.  But once we identified the problem and could replicate it in the lab, the cure was relatively easy.  Going to 18 gauge wire for power and ground (alone) will fix the problem for many.  If not, we modified the firmware routine (standard now in all units built since 7/5/05) to eliminate the symptom.  This firmware modification is available for all E-MAG models at no charge.  So far, installing this modification has cured all (but one) of the instances reporting the symptom.  This instance is still under study.

I installed a P and E about 10 hrs ago to "EXACT" installaton instructions and may be the "1" still experiencing the intermitent miss.  Flew 3 hours this week in sub-0 temps and had some misses but nothing serious enough to cause alarm.

Brad and Tom are helping to identify the source of this issue and have offered replacement of one or both units.  I have not been able to acertain which unit is causing the miss and am test flying under different modes for that purpose.  I.e., ignition set to 'both' , 'L', 'R' and the Pmag circut breaker on or off and the aircraft alternator on or off can offer multiple flight modes that may or may not contribute to or assist to identify which unit is causing the miss.

Miss is probably not the best term to use either, but more of a brief 'stumble'.  It gets your attention for sure, but seems to effect only one plug.  The other plug (opposite ignition) still fires and for that reason it is hard to call it a 'miss' in automotive terms.  On Monday, I will call Brad to give him the 'numbers' of the units in order to determine the mfg. dates.  I may have a unit that was built before the fix and will have to do the exchange.

Looks like there are still problems with P/E-Mags.
I used 18 gauge wire from the breaker to the P-Mag and a similar wire for ground.I'm still hanging on to the Slicks, waiting for a fix.

Haven't talked to Tom or Brad about it, but what if we went with 14 or 12 wires just for the test.  Then run off a seperate battery just for the test.  I know it's not my job to run interference, but I'd sure like to get my 1930's engine somewhat up to speed with a 21st century ignition!

My damn lawnmower has solid state ignition!  Why can't I have it on my plane????

ps (I've still got my slicks too)

Dave, Anytime.  Your ride up the coast is something I LOVE to do.  Nothing like running full bore at 20' and go into a pull up just to watch the earth get smaller!

Watch out for birds!
