0-235 AD

I have just been informed that my 0-235 is affected by an oil pump AD. My understanding is that there is an aluminum gear next to a metal gear in the oil pump that eventually gets worn and fails.

We are thinking that it might be easier to pull the engine (have it down for a top end at the moment) then work in the tight space between the engine and the firewall.

Can anyone relate your experience of the oil pump change?

I have an O235 L2C that came with my Long EZ project. The engine was completely rebuilt, but unfortunately, it was 15 years ago. That means the oil pump AD had not been complied with. Since I'm taking apart the engine to inspected it, it is a good time to comply with the AD. The new pump cost $435 including shipping. I don't recall the name of the company that supplied it, but I can look it up if need be.

Replacing the pump is very easy if the engine is off of the plane. 3 bolts and some safety wire.

Well I dont know wich oil pump you have,, but I was bitten by the oil pump ad a couple of years ago in my aztec,, The pumps that we took out where fine! (2 alum gears) nothing worn or any sign of trouble, and then to add insult to injury, I had to do another ad, (replacing some bolts that where supplied by lycoming with the new pumps!) I think there are about 4 different pump setups that you can have and some are better than others. I would find out wich one you have and make a decision as to change it or not. I know its a very imortant part of the engine, but have you ever heard of one failing?

 Its funny how the feds work,, we recently had a valve drop in our club 150, but do have you ever seen an ad to check the valve train for wear?
I've heard of alot more engines quiting from valve problems than oil pumps failing!

William, Chief A/C just told me that they can sell me the gears pt # 05k19423-s that will satisfy the AD for $229.00 . Is there any reason to purchase a new pump when I could replace the gears.... or asked another way... does anyone know how hard it is to replace the gears?

It sounds like I could have saved a little money had I shopped around for the gears and not bought a new pump. Knowing that, I would have done so.

I didn't look that closely at the pump since I bought a new one, but I don't believe the gears are difficult to replace. The bottom gear will just fall out, but the top gear my need to be pressed out and the new one pressed in. Not quite sure. I would give a mechanic a call to see how big of deal it is to replace the top gear.

We will see if I saved $. i understand that certain cases need replacing and certain others don't. I am not sure of what I have.

I have an 0-235L2C   118 H/P   engine was put in the Long-EZ in 1985 an after checking the log books and flying it  still to this date no oil pump problems.
