GU Canard

I just purchased 213EZ.  I'm a new EZ owner/pilor.  This EZ has the original GU canard and vortex generators.  Several became loose during my flight home.  I do not intend to fly in the rain.  Do the vortex generators add any other practical benefit that would warrant reattaching?  My perference is to remove them.

I have them on my GU canard. They do lower the landing speed by about 10 knots. I also carry extras and a small tube of clear RTV. VG"s seem to attract idiots who try to see how well they are attached.

Once attached with RTV, they won't come off.  Not only does rain effect the GU canard, but so does bugs, dirt, and clouds.

I flew my Long for over 10 years before I put on the VG's. I was reluctant to put them on as I had no change in pitch in rain, bugs, or clouds. I think the pitching issue was addressed in a CP. The authors conclusion was those with problems had their canard incident wrong. I installed them just to see if the claims about slower landing speed were true. They are.

I am confused. I thought the theory behind a canard aircraft is the canard stalls before the main wing and drops the nose so the main wing won't stall.If you alter the stalling speed of the canard by VG's aren't you in danger of stalling the main wing? It's claimed that VG's give a lower landing speed, but aren't you now closer to stalling the main wing? Not a good idea if you are coming into land.

Actually the canard should not stall either---it is just getting on the other side of the peak (reduced lift----pitch bob) and gaining speed before a stall.

The vgs I used were installed aft of the 50% chord line----which if I understand correctly, won't screw with when it peaks but does keep the flow attached with moisture/dirt/bug contamination.  Also, if I understand right, going forward of the 50% chord puts you in danger of doing what you said----upsetting the balance between the canard and main wing.

For what it is worth, the VGs completely tamed my GU canard----and "stall" testing went perfectly---nice pitch bobbing.

I flew this past weekend with the Vortex Generators removed; the canard stalled at approximately 64mph; is this about right for the average EZ canard?  The stall was completely uneventful and recovery was very straight forward.  I used 80 mph on final, which may be a little fast still.

No vgs, Gu canard.
Uneventful "stall" at 60mph (110 km/h).
Final at 75 mph (140 km/h).
