Hi, I am a university student in the Czech Republic, studying in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, where I am specializing in the Aerospace Engineering. I am currently trying to find information on concept aircraft like the "VariEze".

What I wanted to ask is, would it be possible to get some information on how the cabin of this aircraft is heated? It would be a big help for one of my projects, which I am working on. (I am interested in airplane with engine at rear fuselage). Ideally, it would have been great to go see this aircraft in person, but unfortunately, this aircraft cannot be found in the Czech Republic.


I thank you for your time, and any help you can offer (description, photo!!, plan). Please foto. I need to see various resolution this problem. Then I have bigger image. If you are the not the correct person to ask, please can you let me know who is, and I will try and contact them for more info.

Hi Macadr

I have a Longeze and I am not sure about all the differences
in the two aircraft.   Also mine is not flying yet so maybe I don't
know what I am talking about.  

I just thought I should answer as my father-in-law was Czech.
(born in the US but his parents were born in Europe).

A lot of Longezes are unheated and I know that must be cold.

Some Longezes use hot air from a shroud around one exhaust pipe.

The oil heated Longezes and Variezes probably are the warmest.

You understand that a lot of heat comes in through sunlight....  :)

if your plane and canopy are tight solar heat is very adequate...keeping feet warm in the nose is the biggest challange which I solved with electric (wired) motorcycle socks (expandable to pants vest etc).

Because my wife gets cold easily I would like to install a 12 volt outlet in the back so that she can plug in a small 12 volt electric blanket ...that would be great!

What about using car seat heaters?

I mounted a second oil cooler under the rear passenger thigh support.  It does take up a little leg room, . .but I think the passenger won't mind when they get the heat ! !

I ran lines forward from the firewall and used a boat vent motor for the blower.  See pics.

Looks like the hoses will be a major problem.   Do you plan to turn the
cooler 180 degrees?   The fitting on the right is a 45 degree fitting; you
can get fittings which are 90 degrees or more.

I mounted mine in the rear seat thigh support also. There is an eyeball vent for the GIB and a SCAT hose runs to the front for the Pilots feet.

Now boys, . . .don't get all in a tizzy ! !

Technology is a great thing, but once in a while it throws you a loop.  I tried to post several pics on this site to show further progress on the heater system.  I only got this one on.  Yes , . .I know about the oil lines.  What I did was weld the holes in the top shut, and then drill and tap holes in the sides of the fitting boss to accept hoses on a lateral plane.  The whole thing worked out quite nicely.  I've got a door in the forward part of the heater plenum that the GIB can open or close for more heat in the rear.  I always will be getting heat up front through a 2" flexible heater hose that goes up to the throttle area , then splits into two pipes that feed each leg.  I also got a rheostat from a bone yard for the fan speed switch.  Mounted in the roll over.  I'm still makin' a cover for the top of my plenum so it won't get destroyed by the GIB when he gets in/out.

No time tonight,  but I'll post more pics later.

Installed the 12volt outlet prior to flight from Eugene to Columbia for the GIB. Spent $30 on a 12 seat heater (with massage option) and my sweetie kept warm with that and one of our 2 down sleep bags tucked around her...at 10k + ... easy, inexpensive and effective....


and electric socks are the answer (IMO) up front.

Nice  work ! !

Only  drawback there is that you're using cold air to feed the heater.  

In our system,  we are recirculating cabin air so the end result should be a warmer cockpit.

Looks like nice work though.
