Hangar Flying / GU-25 Elevator bushes
« on: April 26, 2011, 11:40:27 PM »
G'day All,

Wondering if anyone knows of a source for the bronze (?) bushes used in the elevator hinge brackets on a Vari-eze GU-25 canard?

Regards

Hangar Flying / Cold air on the feet.
« on: December 26, 2007, 09:54:38 AM »
I minimised the airflow leak by sealing up all the outflow leaks and white duct tape cut out to the shape of the movement of the elevator torque tube and applied on the outside of the fuselage.

The remaining leakage is fairly small but helps to keep the back of the panel (avionics) cool. Even with no leaks you'll find your feet still get cold as they're in the shade.

So for winter flying a pair of sheep skin Ugg boots, they're light comfortable and warm even at sub zero temperatures. Works a treat!

Hangar Flying / removing the bolt through NG6
« on: December 09, 2007, 10:23:53 AM »
G'day Marc,

I dont' have the book nearby but I'm guessing your refering to the nose leg pivot/attach bolt.

If that is the case, then your not the first to have a problem. I felt the need to remove it for inspection a couple of years back and had exactly the same issue.

In short I used a very heavy doly on the other side a second person to hold it in position, a hard wood block between the 2 vertical support stuctures and belted away, it came out with out secondary damage, but I worried all the way through.

The reason, the bolts bent, depending on how bent will determine the extent of your trauma getting it out.

One things for sure you'll be very gentle in future  when you lower the nose wheel onto the runway when landing.

Good luck

For Sale/Wanted / Helmet
« on: December 03, 2007, 09:13:03 AM »
G,day Allen,

Can't sell you one but I have just retired my old SPH 5 after 17 years and about 7500 hours of use.

It was a very comfortable helmet but hotter than hell in summer. After 17 years of use it was still in good condition although the earphones were rusting out due to probably several gallons of sweat passing through them over the years.

I now have a brand spanking new company issued Gallett LO50 with ANR probably worth about 1700 USD. Very light, small profile but not as comfortable as the SPH 5, appears the french must have smaller frontal craniums than us Aussies. The ANR is good with low freq. but useless with high freq.

Worth a look at if your still looking.

Hangar Flying / Micro fill

Hi David,

As many have said you will probably get away with it.

However that been said I would aviod it, as the temperature drops below ideal the molecular change is inhibited due to increased viscosity. So what you end up with is a partial cure, it may look like it has gone off but it probably hasn't completely. Down the track you may find that there is shrinkage of the micro after you have finished the job leaving an aesthetic blemish.

Take a look at any light weight final finish just after completion, it will, if blocked back look like a mirror. Go back in a few years and look at the same finish and London to a brick you'll be able to see the print through of the glass cloth. Same process.

You've probably completed the touch ups by know so it may be to late, but if not it is dead easy to make up a tent and run a blow heater for awhile. Then you'll sleep sound at night knowing you've done the best you can.

regards
Mick
