removing the bolt through NG6

I tried changing the brass NG6 bushings, but can't get past removing the bolt.  The head turns, the nut comes off, but the bolt doesn't slide out.  Even hammering it doesn't work.  I don't want to break anything, but did give it several dozen whacks.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

G'day Marc,

I dont' have the book nearby but I'm guessing your refering to the nose leg pivot/attach bolt.

If that is the case, then your not the first to have a problem. I felt the need to remove it for inspection a couple of years back and had exactly the same issue.

In short I used a very heavy doly on the other side a second person to hold it in position, a hard wood block between the 2 vertical support stuctures and belted away, it came out with out secondary damage, but I worried all the way through.

The reason, the bolts bent, depending on how bent will determine the extent of your trauma getting it out.

One things for sure you'll be very gentle in future  when you lower the nose wheel onto the runway when landing.

Hi Marc.

I recently installed one of those electric nose lifts and ran into the exact same problem as you have. I even made a hole in the side of the nose so I could get a swing with a 2 Lb hand sledge. It didn't even budge the bolt.

Finally I got it out with a saws-all from the bottom. I used a metal cutting blade. It cut through the bolt in ten seconds.

While you have the pivot bolt out why not fit the taper bearing kit from Jack Wilhelmson

how do you bend the bolt anyway?

my VE has over 1000hrs, and the bolt was as straight as an arrow!


(maybe I just land super smooth  :wink:)

As for the bearing kit,  well I agree it is a good way to go,, but for me, its not worth the $300 bill.  I machined new bushings that have virtually no play, and the total bill was under $20.  

If you replace the bushings with new, install a grease tit or drill a small hole in the bottom of NG6 so you can lubricate the bushings.

When I removed mine, they where as dry as a bone, which probably lead to their premature wear. (if you can call 20 years premature)


Also, if you machine your own bushings, cut them so as to be only 0.010 or so smaller width (when installed in NG6) than the pivot shaft. This will eliminate any side to side play without using the silly washers.
