Thought that subject line would get your attention.

Had a good conversation with McGyver the other day about if it were to happen what choices to make...

All things being equal I think i would choose water over a farmers plowed field...

But I am really wondering what everbody else thinks?

If you had an engine out how inclined are you to go for a water landing?

I generally go with what's under my nose or I know where a decent spot is right behind me.

Tis driven by altitude. The lower you are the less options your going to have.  In my case, if the engine does stop, am going through my procedures for a relight.  I use 70KIAS for a glide speed too.

Then the next debate is nose gear position.  Generally I would go with down, but if you need to stop quick.  Leaving it up and dropped the nose gently will stop you far quicker.

It's always, "what ifs" when flying and your best SWAG for a good outcome.

Every canard landing that I have ever heard of (that is actually trying to land on the water as opposed to just crashing into the water) has survived it.  Same can't be said of those landing off road----mixed bag.

If you land in water, just be VERY sure that your nose gear if DOWN.

When you land with the nose gear UP, the rear wheels will almost
instantly slow the airplane which means that the nose will instantly
hit the surface and submerge.   This will tear off the canard, probably.
It has already happened years ago and was reported in the CSA newsletter.

If you land with the nose gear down, the nose MAY bounce slightly
upward (but is NOT going to flip you over backiward) when the tire hits
the water.    Then you will stop real quick but the canard will still be on
the airplane.

When deciding on a water landing vs on on dry land you need to consider that you may be knocked out or unable to swim due to injuries and possibly drown

Water landings can be very dicey for numerous reasons, wave conditions, wind, shore locations are part of the areas to consider.

As an old float plane pilot we had to watch out for freaking boats driving into the sea lanes.  Let alone floating objects like poles or tree limbs.
