n82cd long ez project

I was wondering if anyone had any information on this plane.  Its a project that is currently for sale.  From a simple google search I found it was built by Gordon Diehl and Ron Corley and later owned by Moises Romero.

Currently it has the fuel sump covers on the underside of both wings removed.  It appears that someone flew it to Oshkosh in 2002 and 2003 and since then has been majorly deconstructed with someone cutting off the nose, along with the cowling, engine, and engine mount all missing.

 I was hoping someone could let me know some history on this plane and why they stopped flying it.  Why would someone cut out the fuel sumps?  Any info would be much appreciated.

Hi Whoever you are:

I had to cut off one fuel sump because I was changing engine mounts.
(The original mount was much too flimsy IMHO).   A pair of bolts holding
the aluminum extrusions to the lower longerons can only be reached
by removing the sumps.   Another GOTCHA on building.   Luckily you can
buy the fuel sumps already formed from the guys in N. California (I
forgot the company name).  (Featherlite?)

Long-EZ N82CD was built by Gordon Diehl and Ron Corley and first flew in March 1983.  It now has over 1500 hours and still is flying great trips such as to our second home in BAJA where a soft field is used.  Any info I could give to anyone who is interested in seasoned experience, let me know.  Gordon and Mary Lou Diehl.  (By the way, that's Air Force One in the background!  ed.)

Looks like it was a nice plane with a good engine mount that, if not cracked after 1500 hours, was most likely not flimsy.  Sounds like it isn't so nice any more....

Waldo, you mixed up 2 airplanes.   The "change the engine mount" work (that I did) was on N199BH, not
the airplane without mount, engine, or nose.

My GUESS is that someone was in the middle of making some mods, took off the engine mount,
cowling and engine, cut off the nose to lengthen it (anticipating a CG problem) and then had
to quit (lost medical?).

Does anyone have anything to pay particular attention to when buying a project?   I took the attached picture of the nose, along with some others.  The nose was the worst looking part of the plane.

It appears to me that the owner is starting a long nose install and major refur.  This plane may have lots of hours on it and or be a good project buy.  (could be a bad deal also) Some one needs to look at it with you if you don't have the experience.  Lets us know where it is located and if you want someone in that area to help.  EJ  N36EJ
