Hangar Flying / This forum is becoming useless
« on: September 07, 2006, 07:14:18 AM »
Hey guys... sorry I've been away from computers the last few days.
It sounds like we have had another rash of spam. I suspect all the
moderators might have been gone at the same time.

Just to recap the current situation, we have the site spread among
several servers (3 total) at various budget hosts. The main host that
Jerry had the site setup on does not allow any changes to the bulliten
board software that runs Hanger Flying. So some of the things that
have been suggested such as captha cannot be implemented currently.

The plan is to move the site to our main cluster (16 CPUS/2 terabytes of
disk and 32gb of RAM) that is co-located in a data center giving this site
essentially unlimited storage and bandwidth. And we need the bandwidth
as the CSA picture archive has been constantly pushing us over the
quota .

However, it takes time to move the site to a new server due to the issues
of combining the three servers. Time that I simply do not have right this
minute due to work. I have not even seen my Long-EZ project since
about March. It is not a long-term issue and I fully expect to get the
move done by the end of the year (and get the Long-EZ completed
this winter !!!)

In the mean time I think it would be great if we could get some
additional moderators that could delete the crap that gets posted. Once
we turn on the moderator flag for you it is so easy to click the X on any
offending post and delete the stuff.

Anyone that has been around a while is welcome. Charles, Waiter, Daudi,
Bruce, Harry, Eric and Dave just email me and I'll get you setup.

Thanks for the help and patience and hopefully we can put an end to this.

No problem Bruce. Good luck with that deal from
the Nigerian General

How's your Long-EZ coming along?

Oh come on Bruce give me a break. We are not trying to drive anyone away
with our “easy for spammers” attitude. As I said in my previous post we
cannot implement any immediate changes to the forum software because
the hosting service where the site is currently located does not allow it. It is
our plan to move the site to our own servers to allow us to implement the
latest forum software and many other things when our priorities allow it.

See what happens when I turn my back... those spammers are
like little kids.

Sorry guys, I delete spam almost everyday, I was out of pocket this
weekend and it looks like it got a little out of control.

The board is setup for registration but the spammers have gotten
tools that auto-register. Unfortunately we have not had the time to
move the site from where Jerry had it hosted to our own server where
we have complete control.  We cannot do any type of phpBB image
registration verification or any other mods at the current host. The site
is currently on 3 different servers and my plans are to combine all three
to one of our servers which has essentially unlimited bandwidth and disk
space.

I'm looking for a first flight of my Long-EZ in the next three or four months after four looooong years.
I hope everyone understands that most of my free time is focused on
getting the Long-EZ done. I will have much more free time after that
that I can devote to this site. Bear with me guys and we will get some of
this taken care of.

Noel: I appreciate your offer of help and will take you up on that when
we get things combined.

See Perry Micks Long-EZ details at http://www.bridgingworlds.com/DUCKT.HTM

Also back issues of Contact Mag at

There are several issues that detail Ron Gowan's Long-EZ.

Hangar Flying / our classified section
« on: February 01, 2006, 12:49:16 PM »
Currently the classifieds are on another server due to restrictions at the
main hosting provider. The classified server does not have a domain
name(too expensive for what it gives us) so we access it by IP address.

Why does this matter? Microsoft changed something in Windows XP service
pack 2 that causes links to break that are made up of IP addresses. Firefox,
Netscape, previous versions of Internet Explorer all work fine as far as I know.

There are so many reasons to NOT use Internet Explorer. See
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ if you would like to download it. It has
corrected this problem for many people as well as many other problems.
Firefox is so good at preventing spyware infections that I don't run any
type of spyware/adaware type software since switching.

The site will be moving to a new server soon(time permitting) and this
problem should go away then for the members who must use XP SP2 for
some reason.

Hangar Flying / Don’t go away mad, just go away. I did!
« on: January 23, 2006, 01:34:25 PM »
I appreciate the willingness of everyone to put their money where their mouth is! I've had several people email offers of support. From a financial standpoint the Google ads we placed at the top of the main page last month are going to be adequate to expand ez.org and allow us to continue hosting the CSA picture archive as well as an expanded member section. The new member section is going to allow everyone to upload their own pictures and edit their own info, links, etc. Look for it soon.

As far as a merging of CSA into ez.org, etc. I can't speak for Terry but my opinion is their are too many members that just do not use the Internet and a printed newsletter is by far the best option. I think we should all support the CSA newsletter in it's present form. Terry and I will continue to work together with the picture archive and anywhere else that makes sense. I'm open to any ideas and I'm sure Terry is as well.

I agree 100% on the Yahoo/AOL/MSN thing. My hats off to Google for resisting!

Not sure what is going on but we seem to lose posts sometimes.

I received an email from someone that saw a question about a prop for a
rotary yesterday. The topic is no longer there... not sure where it went but
it was not removed for any reason.

The ONLY posts we remove are from spammers.

If you posted the question about the rotary prop - please repost your question. :D

Hangar Flying / Banner ads?
« on: December 17, 2005, 08:55:37 PM »
Thanks for the concerns. :D

ez.org does not have to go commercial to continue to operate. The banner ads (that are only going to appear on the top of the main page) are an experiment to see what type of revenue could be generated. More revenue = bigger bandwidth and more disk space.

I have a large number of pictures of canard aircraft that cannot be loaded to the site now and Terry Schubert continues to add to the CSA archive. These jpgs require a lot of disk space and a require substantial  bandwidth to download.

I hope the ads do not cause too much of a problem for anyone. If they work the trade off for a faster site with more content will be worth it. I tend to ignore banner ads on other sites so I may not be a good judge. How does everyone else feel?

If you are not seeing any ads at the top of the main page that means that Google has run out of ads based on the content of our site. I've seen a few ads: Amazon, Controller.com and Garmin.

Hangar Flying / EZ of the month
« on: May 25, 2005, 11:48:59 AM »
Sounds like Dan has his priorities straight. I’ve actually pestered Dan a
couple of times so he knows we have not forgotten about him. :)

There have not been any submissions lately and I’ve shaken quite a few trees.

The EZ of the month entry requirements are straightforward:

1. Do you have a Canard?
2. Do you want to write at least 10 words about it?
3. Do you have a couple of pictures?

If you answered yes to all three questions your canard could be the next EZ of the Month.

So Tomkat, can you answer all three questions yes? :D

Hangar Flying / EZ plans for all...
« on: May 24, 2005, 03:46:36 PM »
The censorship issue came up a month or so ago. We have deleted a couple
of porn links and other inappropriate posts, but other than that there is no
censorship.

Older posts were being removed automatically by the forum software but we
turned that off around the start of the year. Can't really explain your missing
post except stuff happens sometimes. I would not trust this fourm
software to be 100% 24/7.

Hangar Flying / Long EZ templates
« on: April 30, 2005, 10:40:44 PM »
"Actually, I DID submit a wanted ad for plans with templates a few weeks ago. It never appeared. I assumed that it did not pass muster with the moderator so I didn't resubmit."

No problem with the moderator, the only thing censored is personal attacks and porn links.  Please try again.
