Are you guys that cut holes here and there, checking the plans for the underlying structure?
There is absolutely NO way that I would cut holes in the leading edge of the strakes.   
I don't have my plans with me so I cannot look .  It just seems scary.   Debbie Iwatate
published a pamphlet with 4 or 5 mods that she and others developed.  I suggest that
you find one of those (I don't know if she is still selling them).  She has nice plans for
an inlet in the NOSE.  Maybe one of aeronautical engineers will post on this "home in the
leading edge" idea.   SCARY!

You will get the Jan. issue and the directory right away.   Then you can contact members in WA.   You can start with Joe Hull
who has a Cozy 425-898-7972.   Most of the owners/pilots have Longezes or Variezes.   A ride in either of those is not as
good as a ride in a Cozy, Eracer, Aerocanard, or Velocity as you can see more riding the side-by-side aircraft.   There are 29
CSA members in the directory so I cannot give the phone # for each one.    You could also contact the state representative for
the CSA, Joe Person 425-481-3645.   Joe has a beautiful Varieze and is more knowledgeable than many or most of the CSA
members.   He possibly knows some canard guys that are not CSA members but can give you a ride.

OK   I am glad I could help.   You still need to get the CSA Directory and the Jan. issue of the newsletter.
There are a LOT of guys in S. CA but you need to find them; the direcotry will help.   It also will help if
you are flying somewhere and have a part failure.   There are a few guys who are identified in the directory
and who will pick you up to take you home or to take you with parts back to the airplane.

I assume that David put you on the Squadron III email list.

Thanks for the warnings on cost; they will not get my business.

I do have a Samsung II with AnywhereMap.  Am trying to learn how to use it.   I consider it VERY unfriendly to users; maybe they will improve for those who purchase later.

One problem with Samsung:  It comes with an automatic cutoff in case you just lay it down somewhere; that saves the battery.  But you have to remember to touch the screen to keep it functioning.  The original cutoff time was 5 minutes.   I reset that to 30 minutes but that is the maximum you can use.  I consider that dangerous.  And when you touch the screen, you have to be careful where you touch; you can be launched into a description of an airport in the area.  Then you have to touch the [done] button to get back.  AnywhereMap also provides for lots of things we will not use (as I don't have a VOR, for example).   You also can get the magnification wrong and the location off.   THEN try to find your closest airport.   I think the software writer had never been in an aircraft when the engine quit; it is just not user friendly.

Maybe I will regard it with more favor when I learn to use it, if that ever happens.

If you go to a carpet business and ask, you can find a lot of discarded "underlayment" in their dumpster.
It should give sufficient padding where you need it.  Be VERY careful as they use disposable blades to
cut the carpet.  After using a blade for a short time, they throw them in the trash with the rest of the
underlayment.  That gives several very sharp blades in the underlayment.  There probably will be some
usable pieces of carpet as well.

Before you start doing any work, find a builder that knows how to do epoxy work.   Otherwise you may make anything
too heavy (or too light).  I had a VERY brief intro., then was on my own.  I got some stuff too heavy.  I started almost
exactly where you are. 

You REALLY should consider the plans from David Orr.  They actually are from the Santa Monica EAA chapter.   They are
very good.   If you later find that you have a CG problem, you will have room to move the battery forward and put other
stuff in the nose.  Many people have put the brake mechanism in the nose so you probably will be working in there a
bit.  That will be a good place to start (after you do the practice work that Burt put in the plans).   I built a 5' cover for
a spa as practice.

If you build a little heavy, it will not hurt so much in the nose, due to the CG.   I have a really heavy upper and
lower cowling that I will have to replace eventually.   I have to get it lighter.
