oil separator

Hi, I have a 0-200 engine in my VE and an considering a oil/air separator. Any thoughts on installing one verses just plumbing a line out the back next to the exhaust pipes. I have heard conflicting arguments for and against the separator and would appreciate other opinions. Thanks

Some say the combustion byproducts that get by the rings and end up in the oil separator make the oil in the separator unsuitable (acidic) to return to the crankcase.  If you want to plumb the separator to a catch can, I think that is fine.  I just let mine go next to the exhaust.

I'm more/less with Dave. Except any blow by past the rings will get in the oil regardless.

I've seen a couple of planes that have the vent tube strapped to the exhaust, metal tube of course. Any oil mist basically gets burned to a crisp. An issue is if this vent gets plugged (like frost). Most have a 'whistle' tube or small slit in the rubber tube way upstream just in case. Don't want to be blowing a crank seal out!

I have found that my tube out the back works great.  I fill to just 7 qts since the first one goes overboard.  If I got less than 6 I put one in before departing. I fly a 0 -320 Lyc.  I get just a little film on the prop after a long flight. Not cooked on as I have the prop clock for it to miss. The oil/air separator seems to be toooo much trouble. Save weight with the tube installed as to plans. EJ

Forgot to say that my tube comes out at near the top of the top cowl thru a short copper tube bonded to the upper cowl flaten so the spring want come thru. EJ
