Hangar Flying / Cassidy 326
« on: September 12, 2006, 09:15:05 AM »
Folks, there is a spam poster responding to some of the threads, with generic comments and a URL for something in France.  The name is listed as Cassidy326. Probably some sort of automatic thing.  I deleted his reply but seems like it may have deleted the entire topic instead.  My apologies!

Hangar Flying / Comments regarding Defiants.
« on: May 28, 2006, 06:21:00 AM »
Roddy, I built and am flying a Defiant.  It is a wonderful airplane.  Very easy to fly, holds lots of stuff, and gives you a huge safety factor over the typical airplane.  The downside?  It isnt as fast as other canard types, it requires twice the fuel, oil, and maintenance vs a single engine plane, and it is just a little awkward to get in and out of, being a "top loader".

Whos Defiant are you looking at over there?

Hangar Flying / 12Volt body heaters??
« on: March 19, 2006, 06:35:50 AM »
There are a couple of LongEz's near here (SE MI) that have heated seats like a car.  You can buy the inserts and put them inside your upolstery.  Apparently it works very well.

Hangar Flying / Defiant fatal crash
« on: December 06, 2005, 07:44:42 PM »
Drew, I'm not that "in the know".  But I did see some photos.  The biggest bad luck item is that fact that the airplane flipped over, and caught fire.  It skidded into a corn field which could have been alot more forgiving, and must have caught a wingtip or something.  There was a wheelpant way back on the runway (going from memory of a phone conversation here) which may have been related to the whole crash, who knows.

The judgement part, as you have already seen, is the use of a two thousand foot grass strip.  I wont use anything less than 3000', paved.  I typically have a 1600-1700 foot takeoff roll.  On pavement.

Hangar Flying / Defiant fatal crash

I am the builder and pilot of a Defiant.  In addition, I was contacted by a Sheriff in Indiana who was assisting in the investigation of the accident.  I'm not sure how you can get "closure" as you say, from this forum.  If you are truly the victom's wife then you have my sincere condolences.  This accident didnt have to happen.  It is a real shame.  But it appears to be the result of a combination of poor judgement and plain bad luck.  I am so sorry.

Hangar Flying / Cozy and Defiant at Culpeper
« on: November 22, 2005, 04:34:17 PM »
I think that was Steve Sorenson and DL Davis.  Steve has about 15 hours on the Defiant, its brand new.  He said he was flying with the Cozy to get inflight pictures.

Hangar Flying / Long Ez Autocad Templates
« on: November 19, 2005, 05:36:21 PM »
When I was starting my airplane I had the pleasure of having a couple of "seasoned" builders coaching me on the hot wiring etc.  One time I was laying out a ruler on a foam block, couldnt seem to get it to sit on the exact position in "tenths" that I wanted.  One guy grabbed it from me, eyeballed it without a tape, and put some nails in the rule to hold it to the foam.  I measured it and it was perfect.  He said something that stuck with me: "You will never reach the level of perfection called for in some of these plans.  Which is good because you're not building a swiss watch".  I applaud your efforts to put the stuff in CAD.  And Waiter, go online and search for "free cad software".  Most everything will import autocad.

Hangar Flying / "Dead spot in Roncz canard?"
« on: October 09, 2005, 02:15:22 PM »
I can't remember what airfoil the Defiant canard has, but mine pools water when flying in rain, around the aft 1/3 of the chord.  Just sits there in puddles.

Add to the list a Defiant that last week crashed on takeoff and burned down in Indiana.  Sad.

Hangar Flying / Black stuff on prop
« on: August 31, 2005, 05:47:39 AM »
It sounds like lead, maybe mixed with the remains of rebuild oil or something.  But lead is really hard to remove from your prop with any sort of solvent.  I normally see a gray/black spattering due to lead, but my prop is black so maybe some of it blends in.  Try using one of the cleaners made for glass cooktop stoves.  Harry Manvel.

Didnt know about your CFI requirement, that changes things.  If you cant find one to do that let me know.  Where are you in Michigan? We have several CFI's who work with us at Pontiac.

I had the same situation when I completed my airplane, only they said I needed 10 hours in type.  So I did what Waiter suggests, I went without for 10 hours, then called the agent and said "okay I have 10 hours."
