Hangar Flying / Lyc O-235-C Unerstanding Power/RPM Curve
« on: October 01, 2006, 03:15:21 PM »
Please,
I fly a Lyc O-235-C-2-C
How to understand the "Power and Fuel Consumtion Curve" NO 8210 in the Lycoming "Operator's Manual" ?
I beg your pardon for my poor english.
Their are 2 curves. I don't understand what the difference is, and witch one to concider  for my engine's actual data at static RPM and in fly figures.

BHP = Brake Horse power; Ok. (Prony, etc. ...)
CORR. = ?
Propeller load vs Full throttle : What is the difference ? A lot of HP can I read, but which one to concider according to my actual cockpit data ?.
Present static RPM is 2200 (not more...), at 470 ft (LFPF @ Paris-France).
Frogs eater, yes !

Regards, and thank you for your help and explainations.
It's now 2300 CET. Suggest, it's time to go to bed for me

Monday (Aug 14) This is one EZ pilot that is actually glad to have joined "the club" ("those who have, those who will").

  You are welcome

  very uneventful ......
It hapend to me 2 weeks ago, afternoon last flight, cheking speed w a new prop; satisfyed w figure, discussing w ground's friends and .....  forget to set gear down. (Standard worm gear system) Damned check list.
Usualy I confirm "Down wind, gear down". Skip one step one time is suffisant for consequences (and enough, I hope for futur......).
Splatch !....promptly understood the situation, and remember an "experimented" friend ("those who have"... 2nd issue....) : don't wory; continue "as usual", nothing will happend but stop, not necessary to have heavy bracking, engine off, advise traffic that runway is momentaly "not cleared"..., as soon as stoped, go out, extend gear (it is time!.....), check nose gear quikly, step in, start engine, and taxi slowly remaining runway down for normal exit, advise "Runway cleared"...........
Total elapsed time : 1 minute, or less......

Just some glass and epoxy for the nose bottom and a new aluminium plate (and change 4 screws).
 And ad a warning horn as discribed in electrical section .!..............

Hangar Flying / Removing Mags

Ron

Once the wire harness and cap are removed (three Screws) The mags will come out.

Depending what else is in the way.

What I mean is is that the mags will clear the engine mount. I found this is easier to move things out of the way rather than renting a hoist and moving the engine back.

Your situation maybe different. The alignment pin will be the least of your worries. With the cap off there is plenty of room.

It is the same with O-235 C2C on VariEze. Remove harness.
 It could be necessary to realise a specialy "shapped"  screwdriver......

Hello,
I saw "somewhere" original the NG17 steel tube can be replaced with a rod 'same diameter) withe a threatered end at the top for washers and a nut.

 Does anybody knows where to get pictures or drawings ?

I wish I could say I found a new way to "debug" the bird. Can you imagine the commercial potential of this venture.  Every Hanger in the world would have "Waiter's Ant Restaurant"; a small ant farm in one of those 10 gallon glass aquariums, just waiting for the Smörgåsbord meal, after every flight.

Waiter

Bugs' life season 2 !
DDT sensitive ?
Is your web site off ? Or no more progress ?

I agree. It's true.
From maddyhome :
<<If you study pictures of a gear-up landing, you'll come to four conclusions right away; (1) asphalt is the best sandpaper ever made! (2) the plans-built nose puck doesn't do diddly; (3) there's nothing substantial enough to protect the NG5 backing plate, screws, and nose gear strut from being irreparably damaged;

and (4) it's true, "there are those that have and those that will.">>

 I was from those that will, I'm recently from those that have.

Regards.

Hangar Flying / Re: Nose Gear Ratchet kit

I bought the aforementioned nose gear ratchet kit earlier this year. Bill Theeringer is selling kits for this. Not sure if he was the originator of the kit or if he took it over from someone. See website:

Hello Don,
I made this mod last winter; easy to do, and works well.
I bought ratchet by web (google "ratchet"...), and find a set of ratchets in England with metric size (I'm French... ). You should find the same in US.
I made the hexagonal piece from a brass "nut" originaly dedicated for home water line job (wash-machine, shower, laundry room, etc...).

Hangar Flying / Egine mount Failure......VariEze Lyc O-235
« on: July 14, 2006, 02:29:47 PM »
All connections to engine are cleared.(electrical, power, mixture, carburator heat, RPM sender, EGT, CHT, etc......).
Engine will be down tomorrow.
The tube is brocken at 0.5" from weld, and exactly at the location of the little hole done to allow warm air to exit during welding process.

Regards,

Does Spruce Aircraft provide the former Ken Brock engine mount O-235 ?

...... Autolite 386 and I never used one yet.  Bosch DR8BPX and the order number on the box is 4226.  IMO go with the Bosch ones, never had a problem with one and it's platinum tipped.

Is that also valid for Lyc O-235 C2C ?
w or w/o electronic ignition.

Hangar Flying / Egine mount Failure......VariEze Lyc O-235
« on: July 14, 2006, 01:17:16 AM »
Of course I'll inspect carrefully ALL the welds. If possible, through magnetoscopy and UV, to look for any possible other cracks along the welds borders.

As you see it, the break is very clean !  Doesn't look as a tear or laceration.
Rather "far" from weld; about 1/2 inch; little less than tube OD.
If possible, I'll contact a "Weld specialist labor" in order to get theyre opinion (not for lawyers...! ), and 'll tell you the result. If any.....
For now, I have a lot of "winter job" during summer time   Laying down engine & fuzy détails, and back.....
To do & to undo, is always to do. As my greatmother said, (in french).
I had rather be flying

Hangar Flying / Egine mount Failure......VariEze Lyc O-235
« on: July 13, 2006, 03:53:13 PM »
Looking for an oil leak (the joint was missing at the bottom of the oill filler...), I was horified to discover a brokend tube in the engine mount .......!
VariEze,
Engine O-235 C2C,
Flying hours : 47 + ground tests.
Mount bought ...25 years ago at Brook. As several other parts at this time.

The brokend tube, is the one running from uper left fuselage fixation (WL 22.5 / BL 8.32) to bottom left engine fixation WL 16.1 / BL 5.75)
Brokend at 0.5 inch above this lovest point. Strait cut, perpenducular to the tube axe, as with a razor  !  ?
I have pictures, but don't know how to link them here.....

When do that hapend ? Don't know exactly. Had my annual visite myselself two weeks ago. was it still existing ? I think NO, but can I be certain ?

Questions :
1 what append ?
2 Is that part still availaible somewhere now ?
3 If not, I'll consider to repair it (I do know some qualified TIG/argon welder, chande this tube or inserting a steel rod in and extending he soldered weld along)

Is there other reports on such failure ?

PS : My plane is now grounded for quite a little time, as the weather is so nice....!

All comments are welcome.

Ok Drew.
Thank you for this clear explaination. I'll read the CP and builders site.

VariEze with LE gear.

Where to find description and/or material for gear heat shields ?
Until now, I don't have problem, but I'm interested to plan this mod.

Regards to you all.

eric r,

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the fraternity.

I know Bob and agree with your assessment of him: he's one fine gent and Linda is a wonderful lady.  When I visit in Cody he provides me hangar space so I'm particularly pleased to see your Varieze gone -- now there'll only be two EZs in that little hangar :-)

If you'd like a few digital images of your airplane while airborne (taken by my GIB while in formation w/ Bob last summer), Email me at jdubner at yahoo dot com.

Hi,
Few weeks ago I saw this plane at parking at Falcon Field in Mesa, AZ via Google-Earth  !
But there is now new satelitte pictures, and she is yet not aparent .

Regards.
