To much lift over 180mph
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:20:07 AM »
I have just completed a long-ez with an IO-360. I did a first flight yesterday and what happed is that over 180 mph the pilot (weight 140lbs) had to use so much forward stick to keep it from climbing even with full forward trim it was difficult to hold down and maintain level flight. 30 lbs already was added to the nose and the W&B were such that the pilot could be as light as 130 lbs. My concern is that the elevator is so far deflected up to maintain level flight at that speed that you have a lot of induced drag from the elevator. The plane was never designed to fly at those speeds so I’m thinking to adjust the ailerons slightly up to reduce lift on the main wing. Or could it be resolve by weighting the nose even more to move the CG farther forward?

My long EZ minimum pilot weight is 180 lbs.  I have an 0-320. The  W&B will provides you a feeling of the operating range of the aircraft. Eventhough our mission is to keep the plane's weight to a minimum, it affects performance as you have seen. I believe you still have some "experimenting" to do on the nose section. Try a better, heavier battery (if its in the nose), and more ballast.  The OPTIMA Gel D51R weights 27 lbs and it fits nicely on the nose. The 360 is a bit heavier than the 0-320 and 0-325 common on the EZs, so it needs to be compensated. I would work on the nose ballast first than "modifying"  any other part of the plane...

If you have the original pitch trim system as shown in the plans, you may not have enough pitch authority at those higher speeds.  Like my plane, most 0320 powered Long-Ezs that I know of, carry at least 20 lbs of ballast in the nose.  I finally converted to an electric pitch trim, sold by Alex Strong and that solved my trim issue.  Take care of the CG issue first and make sure you stay in the "first flight envelope" as shown in the operator's manual, for the entire flight test phase.

Craig: Why don't you run a O-235 like me I don't have any problem above 180 mph HA HA.  ;D

Where was your CG for the flight?  Just keep it forward of 103" and ballast no more if it stalls properly there.  The rest has to be done with incidence on the canard and stronger spring/trim force on the elevator.  Have you double checked your canard incidence?  You can move the aileron trailing edges up, but that puts the aileron mass balances dragging in the breeze.  I true out just over 200 MPH and had to extend the pitch trim tab slot forward a bit to keep from having to hold the stick forward.  Some have gone to stiffer pitch trim springs to add the needed force.

Hey do you have the long nose on the long??  Also do you have the Ronz canard??  I have a 0 - 320 160 HP and always fly over 180 mph with no proplem.  I would be very careful until I found out the reason for the extra up on the canard.  If it is the GU canard you may need to shorten it per the CP. Be careful out there near the speed of sound (funny noises).

also i'm not an engineer or builder but it may sound like your angle on the canard may by high.  but being 140 that's retarded.  go eat mcdonalds.

I'm fying a Long Ez with O 320.
Nose has been extended by approx 10 inches and battery has been moved 10 inches forward. That's garante W&B.
With pilot and pax: fully OK.
With pliot only permament "light" pressure on the side stick is necessary at high speed.
In a nut shell: Check the position of your CG.
