Auto plugs in O-200

What's the consensus on running the 18mm auto plugs (widely available, cheap, and low profile). They are nothing but tractor, lawn-mower, and motorcycle plugs for low compression air-cooled engines. And then what about wiring for running them off a slick magneto? Put boots on the slick wires, or make up solid core race wire?

I don't know anything about running auto plugs on a Mag, but it certainly seems that  the Mag puts out a lot less energy than an electronic ignition does.  I purchased one of those 'wrap around the plug wire' tachs, and tried to use it on my mag.  It wouldn't pick up a signal at all.  I even tried wrapping it a lot more times than recommended, but just couldn't get it to pick up any pulses.

I would think that the larger surface area of the aviation plug might be needed for fouling protection?  I know that even with the aircraft plugs, the mags put out so little energy that they foul up really easily if you don't lean on taxi.

Yes, I know that the electronic ignition systems put out a lot of juice, but the 18mm auto plugs were used in mag fired ignitions such as tractors and air-cooled lawn mower engines, outboards (2-strokes), etc.

Swinn,

I have had one of those tiny tach's in my VE for about 3 years. I had to bare back a little of the metal shielding to make it work and it works fine. However it did induce ignition noise into the comm. not I suspect from the bared back ignition lead but from the unshielded tach wires running up into the cockpit.

I was going to try it.  Need an old set of mag wires and modifty the ends for the auto plug or run a set of good auto wires from the mag.  

Bosch and Autolite have the 18MM plugs.  Since I am in the middle of the desert and can't recall the plug number.  The Bosch was pretty sweet for my Rose ignition.  2 bucks a pop for platinum tipped plug in the bottom holes.  

If you try it, do a serious ground test and a short test flight.  Then inspect closely.  I did ask Klaus Savier about doing this before.  His explanation against it was the output of the mag could be much higher than an electronic ignition.  Have heard of others running auto plugs with mags but never did a face to face with them.  

Hey it's an experimental aircraft, why not give it a shot.  You got two plugs per hole.  

One nice thing about the Bosch plugs, it's easier to install the puppies around the exhaust stacks.  Let alone with the Rose wires just push the boots on vice the freaking  aircraft plug stock aircraft ends.

I would like to get some auto plugs for my Rose.  When you figure out what the part number is, pass in on.

Do you remember what the tip looked like?

Autolite 386 for sure, and I think the Champion d-16 is the cross reference.
As for the post that Klauss said the mag put out more?? I thought it was just the opposite, hence the larger plug gap on the electronic. I do know that the mags run on race cars put out a hot spark at high rpm.

It was a hefty tip.  Your in luck, am headed home for R&R this week and will dig out the plugs.  Hell I was running the Bosch plugs when we hooked up for the form flight in 04.  I got the Autolites stashed somewhere.  Just never ran the puppies.  

I know Klaus has some plug numbers on his web site.  You might try there if your in a rush.  Although some of the plugs I couldn't find anywhere.  Which included speed shops.  Near me was a serious speed shop that had some K&N filters.  I wanted to ensure a K&N filter could handle nearly 200MPH sustained speed.  Their eyeballs kinda of caged when I mentioned this was merely cruise speed.  

Next weekend I will be in the States and will post the plug numbers and send you an email with them.  Getting out of Iraq is beyond a pain in the arse.  

As for the mag output Vs electronic ignition.  Klaus is the King of speed in the EZ class and knows his equipment.

Am back home with my plugs in front of me.  Autolite 386 and I never used one yet.  Bosch DR8BPX and the order number on the box is 4226.  IMO go with the Bosch ones, never had a problem with one and it's platinum tipped.

Is that also valid for Lyc O-235 C2C ?
w or w/o electronic ignition.

I only used the Bosch plugs with the Rose ignition on the O-235 C and it's a pure stock motor with ram air only added.  Top plugs are powered by the mag and aircraft plugs.  I picked up the Autolites because someone had mentioned them in this forum a few crashes before and at a buck a pop figured might try them one day.  

Klaus runs with NGKs or NDs.  I couldn't find the ones he used.

  the mags dont put  out MORE  spark......IT DOES REQUIRE MORE "JOULES"  TO CREATE A SPARK..REQUIRING HIGHER RPMS...and more power....ELECTRONIC IGINITONS  REQUIRE ONLY VERY LITTLE  POWER THE " ARC" OR SPARK ...KLAUSE WORKS WELL INTO 6 VOLTS AND REALLY  LOW RPMS...

Klause mentioned Joules and diagrammed why I shouldn't run auto plugs with a mag.  Although in the future I plan on doing a study on using auto plugs in my mag holes.  Been a while since I hit Santa Paula.  I was out there trying to pick up some cylinders and pistons for a dude that Klause had built up.
