Hi Reb
You really need the hatch and it should be larger than any battery that you
could ever put in the nose. I have had 4 or 5 different batteries in there
and have not even flown the airplane yet.
Be sure to have a good way to hold the battery in place. Mine is strapped
down in case of negative Gs. It also has a little ledge around 4 sides
to prevent sliding around. Of course I have changed the ledge 4 or 5 times
to match the new battery that I was putting in. What a pain.
You might consider making the nose a little longer at the same time.
