Hangar Flying / Re: Desser Tires
« on: May 06, 2012, 06:31:32 PM »
Thanks Von, hope to hear of follow up if you hear of any on the cracking.  I'd much rather have a real aircraft tires on my EZ touching down at 80+ mph but I got talked into these little Lamb sized tires when I didn't know any better.  Could always go with bigger pants and bigger tires but had hoped these would work out first.
Thanks again.

Hangar Flying / Desser Tires
« on: April 30, 2012, 01:16:53 PM »
Anyone, besides Beagle, running the Desser version of the Lamb sized tires?  Do they get a lot more wear?  Do they fit inside tight wheel pants?
They are much closer in price to the Cheng Shins now that the price jumped at ACS and Wicks.  Would feel better running an aircraft tire vs. whatever the Lambs were/are.....!

The aluminum that sticks out is fairly thin (but thick enough to not vibrate).
I feel sure it adds less drag than the step on the other side.  Anyway I
took the step off so it should equal the drag.   Nobody will run into it as
it is under the strake.   So what is your problem?   ???

Bruce Hughes   :)

Well, have seen a lot of canards and none done with sheet aluminum hanging out of the fuselage.  We'll see how it works (and looks) when you get it flying.......
You would have found that step kinda handy now and again, at least I do even with electric nose gear.  Beagle lived without one for a few years but he's in pretty good shape......!

"Almost 1/2 of the aluminum sticks out into the air."

You're kidding ...... right?

Take a look at the information presented in this slide from a drag reduction presentation.  It will explain why Beagle mentions not putting anything like it in front of your cooling inlet.

Hangar Flying / Re: Death of the Canard Builders??
« on: March 15, 2012, 10:55:15 AM »
Von,
There are a few very experienced folk that loosely monitor this and provide expert advice or suggestions.  Most the other forums tend to be chat rooms for a few personalities that dominate and 'fill' a lot of bandwidth. There is an occaisional pearl of wisdom if you care to wade through the rest of it.
With RV's being essentially half completed when the kit is delivered and being completed at over 1 a day it's no wonder they dominate the airwaves.  But it's still fun to go to small fly-ins and watch everyone come over to look at the "interesting airplane" while the RV guys chat among themselves...... ;D

Beagle has just found someone to cut baffles and is making up an order for several.  Check with canardfinder.com

Anybody have one they upgraded from?  Are they easy enough to fit in the upper center of and EZ panel?  Will be fitting it to the hole currently housing my Artificial Horizon.
Thanks!

For Sale/Wanted / Re: Any Cozy IV's (flying OR projects) I could look at?
« on: January 27, 2012, 11:32:09 PM »
New to CS and forum on recommendation from friend who's been in this for quite a while.  I'm in the HOU area and am looking for a Cozy IV  owner who wouldn't mind showing me their airplane

There are some very nice Cozy's near you.  Suggest you spend a couple bucks and subscribe to the CSA newsletter.
There are a couple other forums for canards.  It's a real challenge to separate the experienced knowledge from the wild and crazy cr**p that the newer builders seem to find so exciting.  Good luck!

Hangar Flying / Re: Links to all Long-EZ plans!

Craig Catto was talking to us about this recently.  He has seen duplicate planes fly with one of each.  CS got off the ground a couple hundred feet sooner and the top end was within a few knots, I think the Fixed was the faster.  So what's the point of all that complexity for so little return?

Hangar Flying / Blast Tubes
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:46:39 PM »
I guess I've been hanging out too much with Ramp Vermin (!) but I wonder; does the canard design with updraft cooling reduce or eliminate the need for blast tubes on the mags, vac pump, etc....?  Am at a point where I could add this but don't understand enough about the air flow and heat sink action on the parts in the accessory case due to oil heat.
Thanks!

That UL engine is a real beauty.  I'd lean in that direction.  Go with their 130 HP.  It's a modern FADEC powerplant and not a lot of headaches with their other FWF installations.
