I can put an alternator in my experimental (buy the part) anywhere from 35 bucks to 100 bucks. You are talking at least 300 bucks for a certified aircraft. And I can guarantee you that you are not getting a 200 dollar better quality and safer alternator. Oh----and you will need to pay someone to put that alternator on for you.
I will never own a certified airplane because of all the restrictions---not the other way around.
The other rub is the FAA. Each district can have different rules for aircraft and most of them try to avoid our X class birds.
Last stat I heard, to install a freaking Rose type electronic ignition on a certified bird, it's about 2 grand more for the paperwork. Ain't no doubt in my mind that today's electronic ignitions are far superior to mags which date back to the stone age.
I started back in homebuilding back in the late 70s with a Quickie. Use to cruise up to Mojave back in the days when we had real fun up there. Although I am still waiting for the break through powerplant for homebuilts.
Tis reason I am spending some time in Iraq right now. Building up the bank account to really add some speed to my EZ. While playing around with a wankel to see what I can do to it.
Cheers;
