Hangar Flying / Re: Is the LongEz going to be dead soon?
« on: April 13, 2012, 03:42:47 PM »
All BS aside - you can build a Long-EZ from plans available on the web at no cost.  Here is a link that contains links to downloadable plans:

http://forum.canardaviation.com/showthread.php?t=5200&highlight=downloadable+plans

There are three Long-EZ's being build in the town I live in.  Two are from these plans and I know for a fact that building from these plans works out just fine.  If you google search "Long-EZ project" you'll find quite a few builder's pages with projects in progress.  I'm guessing many more builders have no web presence.  The design is still alive and its evolving.

If you want to build one...download & print these plans, buy foam, glass & glue and get started.  It's not difficult and the plans will teach you what you need to know.  Approach the project like you're trying to get something done (don't dork around and agonize over every little thing) and your build time should be somewhat reasonable.  I've talked to several people who have had their planes up and flying in less than 3 years.  The couple at OSH this summer with the Honda engine built theirs in two, IIRC.

Then again, I've only build a fuselage & spar in two years...so take this for what its worth.  But I dork around and agonize over every little thing.

Here ya go Arnold:

CP26, Page 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------

LONG-EZ HIGH DENSITY FOAM SUBSTITUTES
Due to excessive cost increases, the dark red, 0.2" R250 PV core foam
is no longer being used in Long-EZ kits. For a while this summer and
fall, 3/16" thick plywood was supplied in its place, We have recently
approved a high density urethane/polyester foam (white in color,
18lb/cubic ft density) for this use also. If you receive the white
foam it will be in four pieces, 12" x 48" 0.2" thick. This requires a
micro joint for the instrument panel and F22. This joint need not be a
separate cure, it can cure with the first skin.
Regardless of whether you are using the red or white foam or plywood,
do not change any of the layups of fiberglass or any of the core
carving shown on page 13-5 of plans.

Hangar Flying / Long-EZ Spar Jig available
« on: February 16, 2012, 06:39:24 PM »
Long-EZ spar jig located in Olympia WA. Well built and accurate, it's built two spars so far and has more life left in it. Trade it for a 12-pack of Redhook. (I'll give that back to it's builder)

Hangar Flying / Re: Interesting Long with V-8 video

Yes it is interesting.  I'm doing the same thing, & will be copying his installation very closely.. but my fuselage is longer, wider & deeper so as to better accommodate the V8.

The spar piece you see is just a wooden form used for mockup...not a real spar.  I cut .150 thick shims to simulate the 10-bid layup that connects the spar to the longerons, then made the mounts to fit.  When I make the real spar, I'll make the wood core (I'll use oak)  hard points larger as needed to accommodate the mounts.

The top mounts extend farther FWD up the longerons than the lowers do, and even though they don't occupy quite as much surface area on the spar as the lowers do, they're still alot stouter, have more bearing surface and distribute the load better than the plans aluminum angles.  Certainly alot stronger than what they are hooked into.  I'll end up with more than 10-bid for the connection layup, and I'll probably run the first few layers further FWD on the longeron and inside skin to help distribute the load into the airframe.

You want Long-EZ plans?  Here ya go.  Free.

http://forum.canardaviation.com/showthread.php?t=5200&highlight=downloadable

Download all the files. Take them to a print shop and have the templates scaled until the tic marks along the sides are the correct dimensions.

Some people might say you have to have an original set of plans to build from...but others are building from these plans and it's working out just fine.  Go figure...

I had some .125" 4130 bent into angle at a fab shop. That might be one idea.

Very nice report.   Are you flying yet ?

Who, me?  Not even close.  I'm just some hack that thinks he's going to build his own airplane.  I don't even have a license to fly one yet.

Looks nice Mark.  Have you decided how you will prevent leaks in the master cylinders you mentioned in the video?

Yes I have.  Change them to Matcos.

I can't answer your question, but if you post it on the Canard Aviation forum you'll get some response and may get your question answered.  That forum is alot more active.

Is your canard and wing set 10 inches more apart??
EJ

Yep.  Its stretched...like the Berkut is stretched a foot, and at least two Cozy 4's that I know of.

For Sale/Wanted / Cleveland 10-35 Master Cylinders
« on: November 29, 2010, 01:44:31 AM »
I have a pair of new-in-the-box Cleveland 10-35 Master Cylinders listed on Ebay. I have no idea if there is a market for these items.  I got them as part of a Cozy project I bought, and I really want to use Matcos.

These things sell at Spruce for $469 ea...which is ludicrous for what they are...but apparently they are a certified part.  I have them listed each with a $200 reserve.

However, if anybody on this forum wants these, I would sell them for what a set of Matco master cylinders and remote reservoirs would cost me.  I think that would be around $300.  Better yet, the buyer could just order me the Matco cylinders and Grove remote reservoirs, and hoses to connect them, and have them shipped to me, and I could ship them these Clevelands in return.

Like I said - I have no idea if anyone would be interested...but if you are then send me a PM.

That link I posted has everything you need.  You can print the plans on 11 x 17 paper...although they print out not quite full size.  I think its about 85% full size.  There are a few full size patterns you will need in the plans themselves.  If you're clever you can figure out how to get the scaling right for the few plans pages you need to be printed full size.

For the Open-EZ drawings, have the girl at the print shop adjust the scaling until the tick marks measure correctly.  We kept printing the same drawing until we got it right, then printed the entire set.  I don't remember the scaling on the drawings.  They print on big sheets of paper.

For the Special Performance Canard plans, I think we had to scale it to 137% to get the tick marks right.

In my opinion, if you're smart enough to build the plane in the first place...you should be able to make these plans work.

As a side note - what the previous poster said about adding width is correct.  My Long EZ is 4" wider right down the middle.  10" longer between the firewall and F22.  The extra room will make a huge difference in comfort, especially for the passenger.  Todd made me a canopy to fit.
