Hangar Flying / Pipes

I spent the money and ordered Hal Hunt pipes in July. I'll get some pics as soon as they arrive!

Did you know tthat the ground based transponder/radar can be formatted to NOT SHOW 1200 returns? I wonder if this means that is does not query them or it just doesn't show them on the controllers screen? If it doesn't query them the passive detectors won't see them either! I wonder if Los Angeles ever turned on the 1200's? Don't believe for a minute that the controllers are looking out for you in a VFR environment ... or if they even care to "see" you.

I'll leave the layers of bid question up to those in the know. I can tell you however to search the net for the RV builders sites that have great info on prep of the plastic for creating a great bond line .... layers of tapes of different colors, etc. I would also question some of the composite gurus about the possibility of drilling into the canopy edges to make "flox rivet" holes; sounds good in theory to me, and I wonder of it is a practice?? I have assisted on some RV canopies, and they are mechanicaly fastened along with the glass to canopy to metal junction.

Same goes for your certified airplane.
I've been impressed by a few A&P's and disappointed by many. I've seen "paper" annuals completed on unairworthy aircraft that were being operated under part-135 under pressure of the company owner, and tags placed on parked aircraft (by FAA inspectors) grounding the aircraft for "curled" prop tips (yep, designed that way). This happened numerous times when those props first appeared, and the one I witnessed happened to be parked right in front of the restaurant next door to the FSDO.
Know your aircraft or know your mechanic!

Hangar Flying / regs

Anyone who has ever dealt with the Feds, be it FAA, FCC, DEA, SSA, IRS, or others (dare I mention TSA), knows that there is no letter of the Law and interpretation is at the whim of the local King. I once had a King of the local FSDO tell me to "throw out 43.13, because it is advisory and means nothing to me".
Let someone use your aircraft for free and charge them for parking in your hangar while they are using your aircraft. Then  you only have to deal with local licensing authorities regulating parking structures!
As a CFI, charge them for ground instruction, pre and post flight instruction, and critique of their flight maneuvers from a ground based standpoint.
It's all in the fine print; and I do mean ALL.
The preceeding was for recreational and humorous purposes only, and in no way is to be construed as instruction, opinion, or the political stance of the author.

I went to the links section for Todd's canopies and hit a dead end ... searched google and found "part of" his website at http://www.toddscanopies.com/tdmain.htm
supposed to be the guy to see, hope he's still in the business!
for some reason not adding the
/tdmain.htm gets a blank page.

I have modified my Brock unit, and plan to use push pull cables with that. The mod was fairly simple (cheated a little having all the metal working tools on hand making drilling, countersinking, squeezing, scotch brite wheel finishing, etc), and once I make the cable attach bracket(s) I'll be set. I used the dimensions from the CP letters.

Hangar Flying / nose
« on: September 08, 2006, 08:28:38 AM »
Mine came with a plate which worked fine and did the 360. I have changed the casting to the later model (rectangular with the four bolts vs the original varieze one bolt setup), which will require glass work anyway, therefore the look into doors ... Thety all look good in the photos, but real life use will tell the story!

Hangar Flying / Nose gear door help
« on: September 07, 2006, 10:21:37 AM »
OK guys, what's the best way to put them on. I have installed an electric nose lift, and since I'll be doing fairing (glass and epoxy) work anyway, I'm considering the doors for the wheel area.
Is there a great difference in drag from the flat plate bolted to the nose wheel casting approach? The photos I've seen make it look fairly simple, but it seems that the flat plate method centers the nosewheel during retract ... aeronautical engineers please repspond ... all those  unhooded common sense (been there, tried that) types are also requested to post their findings and opinions.

Probably a Harley guy ... like puppies, they like to ride in the back of the truck, and piddle when left parked.

Hangar Flying / prop
« on: August 23, 2006, 01:31:50 PM »
I am curious as to the paperwork that would require knowledge of the prop pitch? As I understand it, it depends on how the mfg based his measurements, and could vary by mfg. BTW, I just received my new Prince composite P-tip and can't wait to try it out ... if nothing else, it is a beautiful piece of workmanship! I have heard pros and cons, and now will find out for myself

Great pics. I have a two lever quadrant in hand, and am deciding whether to modify the installed brock unit or go anew. the pitch trim system is in the way and will have to be worked around in any case.
