Hangar Flying / Mystery Canard Sighting
« on: May 31, 2009, 03:24:10 PM »
On the way up the San Joaquin Valley Saturday, 5/30 we flew over a canard heading up toward the mountains over Lodi at about 5,000' around 5 PM.  None of us NorCal folks know who it was.......

The EAA tips videos has the JB Weld repair also, but it is for composite props, as I believe the Silver Bullet is.  Gary would probably be happy to answer the question for wood if you asked......

Propeller Field Repair

Video:
Believe it or not, "super" glue and baking soda can often be used to make a field repair to a nicked propeller. In this video, Timm Bogenhagen of the EAA staff shows the technique that is used extensively in the ultralight and light plane world.

Hangar Flying / Re: Light speed ignition installed
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:42:33 PM »
First was the II+ ignition unit itself.  Returned to the maanufacturer and came back working fine with the comment that there was nothing wrong with it.....
Then the plug into the hall effect module.  Cheap computer type plug and receptacle.  Not the kind of thing to have in the engine compartment of an airplane.  Even automotive applications use better parts.  I understand the crank sensor is a better application but have not seen it or it's components.  Others have had grief with the guts of certain models of the ignition boxes themselves but those may have been worked out by now.
Two of three failures resulted in cancelled trips and inconvenience to others as well.  The third resulted in a half day spent working in 100 degrees and high humidity in the middle of the country on a trip.  Everyone in the canard world seems thrilled with these products but there has been more failure reporting among the RV crowd.  Almost as many as the E-mag products.  But then they are not so "in awe" of the manufacturer.
Good Luck.

Don't ever skip the runup checks.  Have had three failures of Lightspeed in 200 hours, all showed up at runup.  Cheap components.  Replacements seem fine.

This is from The RV forum:

 FS: BMA Efis and AP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blue Mountain Avionics EFIS Sport with AutoPilot. It has been in my plane 2.5 years and now I want to upgrade my panel. The Sport is G2, it is similar to what is currently being sold as the G4 Lite Plus. Original price was $10000.00 for both. Have it all for only $4000.00. I am willing to sell the parts as follows AP $2100.00; Efis Sport $2200.00. The EFIS cannot hook up with the engine monitor. The AP will work with all past and present EFIS units.

You can download the manuals for the EFIS here:
EFIS/Sport installation guide 4.15MB 2.20 http://www.bluemountainavionics.com/...guide_2_20.pdf

You can download the manual for the AP here:

Hangar Flying / Vibration
« on: March 28, 2009, 08:57:25 AM »
I recently had my prop balanced by Craig and then the "drivetrain" by Jeremy.  The prop and spinning parts are excellent without any adjustments but I have a big spike that indicates something touching.  Can't find anything....
Can and do engine mounts 'go bad' after time?  The airframe has had an engine mounted for 13 years now.  I found the bolts at the dynafocal loose recently and tightened them up without removing the weight and was told that was incorrect.  So I did it again and had the weight supported by a hoist while tightening to torque.  Small improvement in vibration but not all.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hangar Flying / Re: Flight planning software?

A lot of your questions could be answered by joining the AOPA and using their vast resources.  They also have a good flight planner.  With that, it's asociated links and a 396 I have flown across the country twice as a relatively low time private pilot.  Airnav is also handy and free.

Dave,
Here are some comments from the Vans site he advertised on a few months back:
1.  I told him i'd buy an engine, he never really followed up to my satisfaction and i didn't send him the money. He never tried to contact me after that, asking what was up.

another guy tried to arrange a friend that was in the area to inspect the engines, lots of evasion on letting someone inspect them in person.

2. Stay away from this guy. We wanted to buy four O-320s from him and he was happy to take our money and ship the engines. When I told him we had arranged to have an AI come and inspect the engines he got very evasive and would not give me the address where the engines were and then said he had sold them all. Had a friend call him a couple of days later and he told him he still had four or five left to sell.

Are you sure about the number (J-7401-8)?  I can't find it on Spruce's website or catalog, nor any other.  Maybe If you check it, I can see if Sacramento Sky Ranch can get you one sooner, or Wicks, or what the other fellow suggested.

Seems 7402 is more common on O-235.....?

Hangar Flying / Re: Viton O-rings in Clevelands?
« on: February 01, 2009, 03:06:53 PM »
I'm using what I believe to be Viton O-rings from and in my Groves.  I recently overheated my brakes.  When I pulled the calipers to check the O-rings they were all shot.  A ripped looking groove had appeared along the edges of the rings.
I'm using DOT 5 fluid so I don't think the fluid would have caused this since my research says it is fairly benign on most soft components, but I may have come to the wrong conclusion.  I think the Viton products are better able to work with different fluids?
What caused the overheating was a stupid mistake (over taxi testing new nose gear components without removing wheel pants) which I'm hoping not to make again so this should be the last replacement of the O-rings for some time.......
Am looking forward to more opinions.

Hangar Flying / Grove Brakes
« on: January 26, 2009, 09:10:30 PM »
I'm having issues with my calipers not releasing enought to stop a constant drag and wondered if others have had the problem.  My A&P mentioned that others have found problems with the mounting plate not mating up properly with the axel on a Long EZ.  Having just completely removed, cleaned and replaced my brakes I find they still drag on the rotor quite a bit.  Have cleaned and greased the slides and replaced the O-rings and the master cylinders are only a year old and I'm still stumped.  Can anyone help...?
Thanks.

Why not ask Steve?  Or the supplier?  You shouldn't have to experiment with this, it's a proven system.
