« on: March 06, 2011, 02:52:25 PM »
I have now contracted with a caterer for the Saturday night banquet at the clubhouse, details on the web site
www.canardswest.org
If you are considering attending the fly-in remember it is being held over a holiday weekend and hotels reservations maybe at a premium.

Hangar Flying / Re: no air filter
« on: January 27, 2011, 09:38:06 PM »
I use a Hunt ram airbox with a K&N filter.
When I was racing vintage cars I spent a lot of time on the dyno. with my 1100cc Formula Junior engine.
There was no difference in power output between Webber carbs. with no air filter and carbs. fitted with K&N filters.

Hangar Flying / Re: High compresion piston for O 320
« on: November 12, 2010, 07:40:11 PM »
I have 9.75 comp. pistons in an O-235 and the change I noticed was increased oil temp, it went to 220 on a hot day on climb out.
I fitted a 10 row oil cooler and increased the oil line hoses to AN 8. It now runs at 190.
I also advanced the timing from 22deg. to 25deg.The HP gain was 12, 118 t0 130 and the climb out on hot days was much improved.

I always compare cost to increase performance and I think I have a winner for the O-235 L2C.
The Sparrowhawk conversion which is basically 9.75:1 pistons and advancing the Mags. to 25Deg.
I did get increased oil temps 220+ on climb out which would drop to 200 in level flight.I changed the oil lines to the cooler from 6 to 8AN.This gave me 10 Deg so it was a step in the right direction, my next move is a 13 row cooler from 7 row.The conversion has an STC and for a Cessna 152 it includes a baffle change and a different prop. The fuel computer shows 128 HP on full throttle climb out.
The set of pistons for the conversion is around $1,000.
Here's a link to the STC

If you find a LongEZ with an O-235 a good mod.that gives the O-235 an extra 10 HP is the Sparrowhawk conversion.
Basically it is fitting high comp. pistons and advancing the Mags.I have the conversion and it makes a significant difference in performance. If you need details email me.
