Hangar Flying / Special THANKS to Waiter
« on: January 17, 2008, 09:41:20 PM »
I inherited a gear problem on a retractable gear RV-4 after my mechanic friend left to ferry a Baron to Brazil just after Christmas, and I and several A&P's have torn out too much hair trying to get the gear to come up and go back down without intermittent failures to retract.

I emailed John (Waiter) last night and asked him to call me, as I had found more information on his website than anywhere else I could look, but could still not solve this problem.  He called me this morning and helped immensely with trouble-shooting what could be wrong and advised me to remove the hydraulic pump/motor assembly from the aircraft and how to test it by itself to eliminate it as the culprit.

I even pestered John at work later this afternoon, and he kindly offered more assistance.

Late in the afternoon, after following John's advice, I was able to locate what I "think" will be the cause of all the problems.

So, here's thanks to "Waiter" for his help today, and for all the effort that he has put into his website that  has probably helped many others who may not have had to call the real expert to help solve their super vexations.

Many thanks, John and best regards always,
Barney

Hangar Flying / Fiberglass, or carbon fiber fuel tanks?
« on: October 18, 2007, 07:10:08 AM »
Currently, I'm flying a VariEze, had it for five years.  My other plane is an RV-3.  The RV-3's fuel tanks are TU, having been fixed many time, and both still have bad leaks.  The RV forum is "awash" with leaking fuel tanks (aluminum), however, I've never read of leaks being a problem with Rutan aircraft here.

Van's doesn't supply an RV-3 wing fuel tank kit, and Evan Johnson (good reputation for building, sealing RV tanks) would prefer not to build from scratch, as we're going to have to do.

Wing fuel tanks are about 48" long, 8" high, and approx. 12" wide.

Please advise any problems with Rutan aircraft and fuel tank leaks, and offer whatever advice you can on building fiberglass wing fuel tanks for my RV-3.

I have already talked with Robert Harris at EZJets and he thinks this project is do-able.

Thanks for any help,
Barney

Hangar Flying / Weather sites

Weather sites

I have used the following weather sites many times over the past few years, and have successfully relied on them for many go/no-go VFR decisions.

http://www.weather.com/maps/activity/aviation/usnationalweatherwednesday_large.html?
Change the day below the weather map.

http://weather.uwyo.edu/models/mos/mos.html
Found this to be very accurate for ceilings.

Codes for the above at:

Maybe these can be a little extra help for those going to OSH.

Hangar Flying / "Operating Limitations"
« on: April 21, 2007, 09:23:08 PM »
Can anyone supply "Chapter & Verse" where operating limitations are required to be carried onboard?

Does FAA look for them during ramp checks?

Thanks,
Barney

I just talked to AirSuppliers.  Their website is down due to hackers sending phishing e-mails from their server.  If you get one of these e-mails, DO NOT RESPOND.

Hangar Flying / Don’t go away mad, just go away. I did!
« on: January 21, 2006, 12:02:37 PM »
I have left the Yahoo canard group, and cancelled my Yahoo account because of Yahoo’s caving in to the government’s subpoena for its search records.  (AOL and MSN succumbed also.)  Google is resisting the subpoena.

Yes, I know, *this time* the request was not for personal information, however who cannot see the “foot in the door,” or the “handwriting on the wall”?

Recently, Graham Shevlin made a proposal (in the Yahoo group) for a “merger” of ez.org and CSA that seems like a natural for canardians.  Here’s my vote for his basic idea.

In keeping with putting my money where my mouth is, consider this post as my pledge to contribute $100 to the merger, as Graham’s proposal unfolds into fact.
