Max Landing Brake Speed
« on: June 14, 2008, 08:13:20 PM »
I'am almost ready to get my VariEze in the air and was wondering if anyone could tell me the max speed that the landing brake can be deployed. That info is not in the POH that I have and a friend who has a Cozy told me that the Cozy's max speed is 100mph.I would like to hear from someone with a VariEze.

Max deployment speed is 90 knots.  The brake is to be rigged to automatically close at 95 knots (and above).  Rigging for this automatic closure is done per the landing brake plans.  The 90 knot max speed with the brake down is per the VariEze Owner's Manual, Third Edition (Dec, 1979) on Page 7.  This edition is available for download from this website as a scanned .pdf file.

You don't want to fly above 105 mph and have the brake snap shut. I did it only once a long time ago and it was a bit of a shock and surprise. It closed with a real 'whack' .......or something like that that made this pilot jump ........except that the seat belt and shoulder harness held me down.. Guess it is nice to know that he auto close fuction does work!
Unless I am really high on a short final I don't use the speed brake until over the numbers. When really high on final, I raise the nose and get it slowed down to ninty mph or less and lower the speed brake. I can save a landing and get it to touch down where I want. Also, best not to use it in a strong cross wind.

I (Vari Eze)  almost always use the landing brake. I find it makes the a/c very docile and draggy at 80 kts approach speed & so very easy to fly & less sensitive to throttle changes. I have rear fences and they improve approach angle (better viz of runway) and you can fly 75kts approach with a  bit of power . I prefer to fly a bit high on approach and I like the ability to descend quite steeply by pulling some power off if I'm too high. The other advantage of using the brake regularly is that if you ever  do get an engine quit on final you can retract the brake and thus cleaned up & then a  bit high, you are more likely to reach the runway.

Lovely a/c.

Yeah..watch that speed brake handle, I almost broke my hand when mine slammed down at about 95 KTS. It scared the sh** out of me.  Live and learn.

I always use mine on my Long.  Even while I am taxing to reduce debris damage to the prop.  I leave it down on my take off roll until 40KIAS and then pull it up.  The one time I forgot to pull it up, the canopy was lifting up a tad and its much noisier in the cockpit.

deploy the landing brake on final if you deploy on base it can take you for a ride with a cross wind. I found that out when I was a nebie.
