I'm not sure if you are aware of this. But if not, this will put some light on your question.
When you recieve the plans and templates, the templates are printed on a large sheet of paper. This paper is then glued to formica, masonite, plywood, or whatever the builder is going to use as the template. The individuel templates are then cut out with a bandsaw, and then sanded until the the profile is exactly matches the lines on the paper. The paper and masonite, now become the template. and iare in essence, consumed.
Rutan warned about copying them, as you could loose size and quality of the original. (Hey, it was 1979/1980)
