Unlike auto insurance, Most aviation policies are custom written. What this means is, you can often "Negotiate" with the underwriter as to the specific language (terms) of the policy;

For example;  Instead of the policy reading "minimum, 5 hours Dual". get the language to read "minimum, 10 hours time in type".

5 hours dual may not seem like a lot, BUT, finding a CFI with Canard Time, can be a challange. However, if you can find a Canard Pilot close by (perhaps someone that will ferry the plane with you) That pilot can act as PIC while you build your 10 hours of "in Type". This is easy to do, simply have the transition / traning pilot named on the insurance policy. I've done this many times.

I present this argument to the broker; - Would you rather have me get signed off by a CFI who has ZERO time in a canard, and odds are, I know more about the plane than he does,

OR,

would you rather insure a high time Canard pilot (none CFI) who'll provide me with transition training in the aircraft.

Hangar Flying / Re: Speed Brake Bracket
« on: July 18, 2008, 05:00:13 AM »
The Landing brake was not part of the original plans, thats why your missing them.

If you have a TERF disk, I thing the landing brake is in there.

The bearing is a phenolic bearing that the torque tube sits in. the bearing then mounts to the back support.

The positioning of the back support should wait until you have the speed brake components in hand. That way you can move the support sideways a little to get a custom fit of the torque tube. and not have to cut/modify the torque tube length.

The seat back also needs to be notched as per one of the CPs. this allows the braacket to break and the front seat to collapse in the event of a hard vertical impact (crash). Otherwise the bracket can come through the seat and penetrate your behind.

Take a look at the CPs. I seem to recall there was a drawing that showed the notching.

Unfortunantly, I removed all this from my plane when I installed the electric landing brake, otherwise I would have gotten you some photos.

Things are now picking up at work, getting ready for harvest. Also put my Mom in the nursing home, thats been sucking up most of my free time.

In spite of all that, I've been able to get a little done.

Aircraft Spruce # 10450-1. I use the same one on my LongEZ. Gaskets are #10449

Call them. When I checked their web site, the cap part number wasnt listed, but the gasket # looks oK.

The new gasket # is 05-01393, runs about $9

OUCH - %$#^&@*(&^#%$  (to quote what you said when  you seen it)

It looked repairable to me.  Did you find out what caused it??

I've had several "dings" that I filled in with FLOX or JB weld.

Metal Props - Rutan recommended to NOT install a metal prop. Seems that a Metal prop is like a tuning fork. The frequency resonance of a prop/engine combination is part of the testing thats performed for spam can certification, i.e. avoid the resonanat frequencies as these will set up airframe osscilations that could shorten the life/destroy the airframe.

A perfect example of resonant frequancy response is the Highpitch signer shattering a crystal glass The singers voice was able to match the resonant frequency of the glass, AND instill enought power to cause it to shatter.

A wooden prop also has a resonant frequency, BUT, because of the dampaning effect of the wood, its impossible to instill enough energy into the prop to get it to vibrate like the tuning fork.

NOTE - Do you have a spare prop????

I mounted mine in the rear seat thigh support also. There is an eyeball vent for the GIB and a SCAT hose runs to the front for the Pilots feet.

Look at the photos, etc on my web site:

I stick with major brand name, 87 octane only, and check the placards for additives when I purchase. I usually stay with one gas station thats close to the airport.  I also do alcohol testing, randomly.  I always fill up my car with the same pump when I fill my cans.

To date, I've never had any problems.
