Hangar Flying / Re: Varieze 2.0 2013
« on: June 26, 2013, 06:25:43 AM »
There's a guy in S.E. Michigan who is nearing completion of a VariEze with a Corvair engine.  You might be able to learn more about that combination when he has flown it.

Bill - If you wrap the top portion with duct tape it should eliminate the chatter..

The site was attacked by a spammer.  I removed all the obvious trash, but forgive me if any of your posts have been changed or removed.  Hopefully we won't start having this problem on a regular basis.

Hangar Flying / Re: Header Wrap
« on: November 07, 2009, 04:58:10 AM »
Some people use the header wrap and have good results, others do not.  I have my front engine headers wrapped but will remove the wrap at annual to inspect the pipes.  I have been told that because they hold in heat, they can cause cracking in the pipes.

Bruce, Tell us your story? Did you have problems with the wrapping? BTW "headers" refers to the exhaust piping.

Hangar Flying / Re: Rough River 2009
« on: October 07, 2009, 10:25:50 AM »
For me, Rough River is the highlight of the flying season.  And also a marker that the end of the season is near.  This year I drove for the first time.  9 1/2 hours in the pouring rain.  It was still worth it.  However I really missed having my airplane there, it seems like at my plane is where I hang out when there's nothing else to do.  This year I just stumbled around aimlessly and eventually bummed a Cozy ride from a friend to get my canard fix.  Hope 2010's wx is better.

Bill I was glad you stopped by to chat.  I have to say the ride home was the best flight I have ever made in an aircraft of any kind.  New Zulu headsets with music piped in via bluetooth, sounded like a symphony hall.  On top at 11500, life was very good.

Hangar Flying / Re: Ventilation Inlet Location

Under the canard seems to be a good place to grab air, at least with a NACA style inlet.  Works on my Defiant, along with others.

As a moderator on this website, I agree on the lack of activity.   Anybody have ideas on how to fire up the site?  I have to visit it several times a day and the low activity is really depressing.......

Hangar Flying / Re: Flying over Canada?
« on: March 17, 2009, 05:27:45 AM »
You have to be talking and squawking a transponder code, to fly in canadian airspace from the US.  Easiest way is to file a VFR or IFR flight plan. Not sure about the current additional requirements for actually landing in Canada, I fly over it to get to eastern US.

Hangar Flying / Re: What system to use?
« on: January 11, 2009, 04:54:40 AM »
West System is fine for the filling/sanding portion of your project.  It isnt recommended for the structural layups.  EZpoxy is probably closest to the original formula epoxy recommended by RAF.

Hangar Flying / Re: Are there any realistic Long EZ simulators out?
« on: December 01, 2008, 10:23:32 AM »
I use X-Plane.  You can download a LongEZ and other models for free.  The Long seems very accurate.  I also fly a Defiant in the sim, which had been engined up to simulate turboprops.  Using the design package that came with it, I was able to change them back to 160 hp which is what mine has.  That too is quite accurate in flight.

Hangar Flying / Re: Elevator Tube sealing
« on: November 30, 2008, 06:13:04 PM »
GlennBob, If you are trying to seal the elevators on an existing airframe, you might try making leather boots which velcro around the openings, three sides velcro to the sidewall, the forward side open for the pushrod.  I used a soft leather material and it sealed out the air pretty good.  Next best thing to having the Cozy setup.
