I had zero cooling problems with a O320 Longez with downdraft cooling.  Even the oil was too cool---170F.

kind of curious---do you have heat shields blocking the radient heat from the brake disk?  Also, do you have wheelpants?  If you have wheelpants, are they vented?

Things to consider (I prefer downdraft for a Longez)---other than what you can already read on this site:

Downdraft cooling: Extremely easy to baffle.  Since the cooling flow comes out the bottom side of the engine, you don't have to baffle around the starter, alternator, pipes, etc.

Updraft cooling with the pipes on top: at least you won't have to baffle around the pipes---but I would not go to that trouble just for pipe placement.

Even though the Silver bullet is a composite prop---the inner core is wood--just has a glass wrap around it.

One thing that sort of went away with the format change was the ability to quickly see what the new unread posts are.  You have to actually pay attention to the date and sort of figure out if you read it or not.  Many of the other sites have a little "read" indicator on the side of the post.  And I think that the prior software supported that.

<quote>I like Drew's Eze runway comment, "any condition/airfield east of the Mississippi." And we're doing OK over here to the west.
All things considered, the Eze is still the one. <quote>

I have flown all over CONUS---and have lived on both coasts---and for the most part based on my pers mins, don't need to break out "the book."  However, there are a lot more "singularities" out west (pull out the book) and virtually none out east.  :^)

Now, as far as "pulling out the book" is concerned, I have to do that everytime I put a new passenger next to me in the Cozy just to maintain CG.  Actually, I use a "gouge sheet" that shows how much ballast I need for the passenge sitting or not sitting next to me based on his weight.

At least in the Longez, I never had to worry about that----CG-wise that is.

Subject---runway length?

Read the POH for any of the EZs---that is all you need to know.  My pers limits will carry me for any condition/airfield east of the Mississippi.

For a newbie---sealevel at any temp----use 4000 ft to practice.  Take off is not the problem (with a 0320 Long, you can get off of just about any short runway out there), it is landing/speed control on landing.  I would not let any newbie fly anywhere near the field limits until he could consistently demonstrate hitting the numbers and stopping within the alloted space on a "big runway."

Once again---if you want to know about DA, CG, and GW----just look at the POH.

There are personal and POH limits.  My personal limits in a Longez is 2000 ft and a Cozy is 3000 ft.

Could not exactly tell what sound was being made by your spelling----but I guess much better than I could do.

There are a couple of other items to check:
1.  See if you have anything vibrating in the cockpit.  Things like the canopy safety piece of metal can make a horendous noise at some rpms as it vibrates on other metal pieces---just bend it a little out of the way---but not so that the canopy can open.

2.  Do you have any tape on the plane that is coming loose?  This can create a lot of racket too.

The auto plugs I use also do not need adapters.  I use standard "racing" harness for my auto plugs going to the electronic ignition.

Your brake line is pulling on the brake.  My guess is that you either have one of these:
-statoflex type line with the diameter too big
-hardline not properly set up (I hate hardlines----switch to something else)
-hardline/stratoflex type line/plans line---routed incorrectly (like around a wheelpant bracket instead of behind)

Here is Marc Z's page that addresses the emag issue: http://www.cozybuilders.org/Emagair_Warning/

Here is Klaus's page on electronic ignition: http://www.lightspeedengineering.com/Technicalities/sport_aviation95.html

Here is the Rose page:  http://www.electroair.net/faqs.html

With dual electronic ignition, you will want to have a second power source.

Not sure about the automotive sparkplug.  I am comfortable running them on my electronic ignition.  Still running aircraft plugs on my mag.

Hangar Flying / Re: Rutan Aircraft Factory CDROM (TERF)
« on: January 08, 2009, 06:28:51 PM »
The Terf CD has a lot of stuff on it including:
-Defiant Manual
-Longez Plans and Manual
--High performance Rudders
--Internal Belhorns
--Special Performance Canard
-Moldless Composite Construction book
-Solitare Plans and Manual
-Varieze Plans and Manual
-Variviggen Plans and Manual
-All of the Canard Pusher Newsletters

For the most part, the big templates are not part of this set.  However, I think everything you need for the special perf canard is there but on a PDF---and there may be scaling issues.  I think that Canardzone.com has the templates posted.  For building, you need both the plans and the templates---so you really need the CD regardless.
