Hangar Flying / Re: Gas Shock
« on: May 28, 2018, 02:35:32 AM »
If you know the force and body length and length extended and retracted, you local RV parts supplier has catalogs of these things to chose from.  Fairly reasonably.  The "ends" are often replaceable, so if you are replacing one already installed, you can often remove the tips and use a new strut of the right force and size.

Hangar Flying / Re: Vortex Generators Retro Permission
« on: April 14, 2018, 03:09:16 PM »
While those who like the vortex generators are OK with small reduced top speed and a much harder to clean surface, it would seem the easier route would be to remove the vortex generators - the CAA has approved the Long EZ without them, right?

Yes we are luckier in the US to be able to experiment by simply flying off major modifications and trying anything less.

For Sale/Wanted / Brock Parts
« on: January 16, 2018, 12:28:24 AM »
I've collected up a number of Brock parts over the years and finally started putting it on a database.

If you have collected up parts the new guys could be reassured to start building them.  Send me the exact part number and the price.  (I use 75% of my last known Brock catalog for unused and 50% of the same for used but usable parts.
Lots of manual speed brake and manual nose gear parts are roaming around.  Most of the other stuff is pretty easy to make - except the GU elevator hinge stuff - and I've fallen into a few of them recently too.

If you have Brock parts and want me to put them in a master list for sale, or if you think you need to manufacture everything these days as Brock has been gone a long time, get in touch, I can stop by my parts stored at the hangar and see if I might save you some work.  If Brock were charging for things today, his prices would be double - after all the US Dollar has been devalued by all those wars and spending beyond collecting taxes.

I forget what type 2 means - is that the most common Dynafocal or the sort of half-Dynafocal?

Hangar Flying / Re: storing a Varieze on the ramp in Phoenix?
« on: July 28, 2017, 12:00:58 AM »
The white paint of virtually all EZs keeps the temperature of the blue foam in the wings and canard below about 145 degrees. I've left a Defiant outdoors for 15 years - same type of construction.  I left a Long EZ out on a SoCal ramp for 5 years, no issue for either - SO LONG AS THE PAINT IS GOOD.  If the paint is good, the structure is protected, if the glass is exposed or primer is dark and shows through, you might hit higher temps which will affect the blue foam.   I found that the avionics (King stuff back then) did need more servicing than when in a hangar, but not to the cost of hangars - not hangaring and accepting some avionics repairs is cheaper.  Hangar temps in Arizona are not much lower than the ramp temps - it's the direct sun that works bad things on dark surfaces like red or dark blue, etc.  We don't paint with dark colors on wings or canards.

We can put two canards in a single hangar - if you'd like a list of Phoenix people who might help you settle in a hangar, just ask.  Having an EZ is like having a grandfather clause - if there are two of them in a hangar and one sells, the other usually holds onto the hangar - not so with traditional airplanes.

For Sale/Wanted / Re: Berkut almost ready...
« on: February 17, 2017, 07:17:10 PM »
Looks like it went to $35,000 2 days before the close of auction...  The kits, unbuilt, were from $30,000 to $40,000 - engine pretty expensive too.

Hangar Flying / Re: Denver Area EZ's
« on: October 18, 2016, 11:05:06 PM »
I can help with locals with EZs - just e-mail me at David at CanardFinder dot net.

Meanwhile, in flight the back of the pilot's head is a minor issue in an EZ - about 2 degrees in a field of about 250 degrees.

On landing, however, the nose comes up considerably and you can't see down to the runway when on final from the back seat - you can see the environment at all times, but not the runway...

If you are thinking about an instructor moving to the back seat - many of them do.  But only after some time with you in the back seat for them to gather confidence in your readiness for the front seat.  I have a list of instructors too.
