Cozy Mark IV

Return to Maddy's Carnard Pages

My wife and I visited AirVenture2001 and caught the "we can build our own plane bug". Shortly thereafter and after doing some research on the web I ordered some plans from Nat. I read through the plans, joined MarkZs cozy email list (8/6/01) and then came across a project for sale in Texas.

Sept 5, 2001 I read an email from Burke Bristow, he was advertising a project for sale. Well I started emailing Burke, who was helping the owner of the project, sell it.  My wife and I decided that I should take a look at it, unfortunately it was the week of 9/11, so we decided to drive from Milwaukee to San Antonio.

Burke took us up to New Braunfels BAZ; when he opened the door to the hanger, there sat a fiber glass tub on wheels with the center spar attached. My wife immediately looked at me and said "you want to spend how much for what?".  Well we walked around the hanger and Burke showed us the winglets and the wings, the turtle back had the windows in, the canard was done. The ad said "Impeccably built Cozy MKIV project estimated to be 80-85% complete."; well after a year and a bit working on it I am still trying to get to the 80-85% mark, but I must say the work was very good.

From the very beginning of this journey my wife and I have noted, quite often, the quality of the folks associated with building experimental planes and Burke truly went out of his way to help both the owner of the project and my wife and I. Vance was also a help, though he was grounded because of 9/11, he did try to help via the phone.

At this same time in my life I took a job with the City of Milwaukee which required me to move into the city, (that has to be unconstitutional), we went looking for a 3 car garage with a house attached. I spent until Dec 31, 2001 turning the garage into a shop; on Jan 1 2002 I started on the project. It has been a great experience, I did take two months off in the summer, (burn out), but have been able to work on it at a fairly steady pace.

Hope you enjoy some of the pictures
