Chapter 20 - Winglets and Rudders

The Plan

In this chapter we build Nasa Whitcomb winglets. We will carve and glass the cores, install the top winglet on the wing, then the bottom. We will cut out the rudders and hook up the controls.

I tried some thing a little different, the Scrouge in me won out! I cut the winglet cores from the last or outside wing section. It worked great! Saved me some scrap. You can see the outside wing template and the bottom of the upper winglet in this photo.

The bottom winglet gave me a LOT of aggravation. I didn't understand the plans when it said about the cambering and I quote. "The upper winglet has undercamber facing outboard. The lower winglet has undercamber facing inboard." I figured out that they were facing in different directions, BUT what I failed to conseptualize was that the bottom winglet changed from the shape of the upper at it's top to the different camber in just 8 inches. I keep feelimg like there should have been another template so the winglet wouldn't have to transition. The top template in this photo is the top of the lower winglet and retains the shap of the bottom of the lower portion of the upper winglet. so you can see the transition to the other template is drastic over just 8 inches.
