Chapter 19 - Wings and Ailerons

The Plan

This is it, The big one! In this chapter we build jig templates, cut foam cores, layup shear webs, spar caps and skins for the wings. We will build the ailerons and wing controls. It is important to do accurate work to insure a straight and level flying aircraft.

The base of the wing has a different shape to allow for mounting to the center section spar. Here we are cutting out this section. The hot wire saw was acting up until we relized we had a dead battery, my son left the inside light on for 2 days.

The middle section and the outside are hotwired in a similar fashion. The ends are lopped off at the correct angle, then the templates are place onto the foam and then you hotwire them. I used John Epplins wonderful steel templates, which make it real easy, almost!

This is another one of those opps chapters. Here now is a picture of the completed wings;-). I sure remember it taking a lot longer to get to this point than it appears here.
