Chapter 4

Bulkheads

F22 Bulkhead shown with harder points for canard and corners. F28 Bulkhead.

  Seatback          Panel
Seatback with 3" wide heat duct.  I later made a 2" wide map pocket. The seatback is 4" wider as are all bulkheads. This is the back side of the instrument panel.  Cutouts for the legs are 2". wider per side and 1" taller.  The top portion has been removed for slightly better over-nose view.  It's 4" wider, more room for gauges.

  LG1          LG2
I made these landing gear bulkheads but later modified for middle sump tank. I am using infinity landing gear so this area can be used for fuel.

  LG3          Firewall
Firewall with engine mount tabs.  I later changed the firewall top to get rid of the fairing shape.

  Fire screws    temp firewall
The screws shown have been ground down on the edges to help the screws have a better grip when floxed in. The temporary Firewall.  I used to wonder why it was needed but as you put the fuselage together it becomes obvious.  Glad I followed the plans.

  Temperature          Driver license.
This is a digital thermometer I built to read the temperature of my epoxy. I use a higher temperature cure.  I use Poly Poxy from Aircraft Spruce. It has a higher tensile strength if I heat cure it.  I make tents around the bulkheads (actually all parts I make) then I blow hot air into the tent using an electric turbo heater.  My typical cure temperatures are from 130°F to 160°F. You think this looks bad you should see my drivers license photo!  When I first worked with this epoxy and fiberglass I got all arrayed in this getup. I had done fiberglass before on some earlier projects.  Those previous products were much more toxic.  So, I started out this way with this project.  One day I removed my mask and could hardly smell a thing. I then realized that it wasn't necessary.  Now I don't use a mask, or gloves.  I could do it in the nude but I don't think that picture would look look any better.
