Covers for the NG
30's.
I couldn't find anything in the plans to help
with this process. After receiving some great tips from previous builders, I
decided to take some of the ideas to make my cover. I have the
updated version of the NG-30's with the higher sides and theJack Wilhelmson NL1-12EHP High Performance
actuator assembly with Electric back drive brake nose wheel retraction
system .
I started by removing the nose wheel retraction system. I reinstalled the
mounting brackets for the landing gear extension system. Next I filled the area between the NG 30's
with scrap foam. After the foam was in, I covered the foam with box tape
for a release. I also covered the outside of the NG-30's and the mounting brackets high enough to cover the lightening
hole with box tape.

I covered the foam with four
layers of BID fiberglass over lapping at least an inch onto the NG-30's. I
clamped scrap wood that was covered with box tape over the fiberglass to
hold it tight against the NG-30's.

After cure, I
carefully pulled the fiberglass off of the NG-30's in one piece. I discarded the
foam that was used between the NG-30's, and reinstalled the nose wheel
retraction system. With the nose wheel extended, I measured the distance
from the F-22 to the front side of the landing gear extension ram cover. I
marked that location onto the NG-30 cover. I then retracted the gear and
measured to the back side of the ram cover and marked that location onto the
NG-30 cover. I cut a slot from mark to mark 1 7/8"wide for the ram to fit
in and I added a quarter inch to each end of the slot to make sure the
cover will never be in the way. The dimensions that were
required for the slot on my cover were 8.8 inches and 5.5 inches measured from
F22.

For fastening the cover down, I am going to use nut plates in the
area behind the retract system because I have the thin cover material to install
the nut plates to. For the rest of the cover I will drill and tap some aluminum
blocks like I did for the landing brake hinge and flox them in place between the
NG-30's.
I had to cut the cover in two by the slot for the ram so that I could get the micro switches
through the cover. I am planning on using cushion foam as suggested by Jack
Whilhelmson for around the hole to seal it after I paint the cover.
This cover took about 3 hours to make.
