You might want to also check out the thread "throttle_mixture controls" on this site.

Hangar Flying / Ez Canard Vortex
« on: January 14, 2005, 10:30:00 PM »
Just use clear silicone and it will do the trick---no specific brand.  The GU canard is a laminar flow wing whose max thickness is at the 50% chord (as opposed to the quarter chord where most wings are).  The best thing to do is to eyeball the end of the canard and look for the max thickness and try as best as possible to mark that point.  Try as best as possible to transfer that point to the upper surface of the canard.  The goal is to get a good measurement from that point to the back of the canard along the upper surface (easier to measure that way).  Don't use the elevator---because it moves----use the back edge of the canard (the piece in front of the elevator).  You can use this measurement in four places (outer edges of the canard and the edges near the nose to snap a chalk line.  Then draw your templates on.

There is nothing stopping you from building your own vortex generators.  There are 6 vortilons that are pretty simple to build yourself.  There are 50-100 vortex generators.  The ones you buy are injection molded----much easier to buy than build.

<snip>Since when is a service taxable?<snip>
I believe what they are trying to do is to arrive at the fair market value of the airplane for tax purposes.  Unfortunately, their method does not work for homebuilt aircraft.  They probably don't care that their method does not work and are willing to go after a "small" group of people (homebuilt aircraft owners) who they don't think will make that much noise

<snip>THIS GREATLY AFFECTS...NOT JUST ALL BUILDERS..and Buyers of experimentals.. but also certified aircraft owners / and buyers . <snip>

While it may affect cert owners and buyers, I fail to see the relative impact unless you are a cert owner doing a restoration.

Len has a great article.  OC could have either assessed the value of materials or the market value of the plane but instead assessed the materials+build time to arrive at a 250k or so figure for a Cozy (give me a break!).  One of the reasons we build these SUV priced airplanes is because we can't afford 250K airplanes!

Too often I have seen the attitude---- if you own an airplane you must be rich----therefore that gives us the right to sock it to you-----because you deserve it.

I have already written a letter to AOPA.  I hope there is a groundswell of activity on this.

Hangar Flying / Heat Muff
« on: January 03, 2005, 05:44:12 PM »
You connect the carb heat hose on the forward end opening on the heat muff with a worm clamp (make sure both the string and wire get clamped down).  The "inlet" side does not connect to anything.  It sounds like you may be confusing a cabin heat muff (which has 2 hose connections) with a carb heat muff.

Glad you could make it.  Good luck on your check ride.  I'll give you a ride once I get the wings back on and it warms up here for good (March timeframe)

I know there was a mod to put a bolt thru the nose gear leg to better clamp on NG3.  Where was this written?  Can't seem to find it.

From Chantilly, it is about 45 minutes.  Pentagon to Culpeper is probably about 1.5 to 2 hours.  Traffic should not be bad.

0900 to about 1500ish on Sunday would be much better.  1700 is too cold and too dark.  I live about 45 minutes NE of Culpeper.
