Title: FAA registration question
Post by: neild on March 11, 2013, 12:55:29 AM
I recently bought a stripped down (no engine, no instruments) Varieze with no documentation. It appears to be well made. The previous owner from whom I bought it (and who did not register it), knew the original 'N' number. I looked it up: the plane had been registered originally about 30 years ago and then was decommissioned a few years ago. What is the easiest path to getting it into my name, with a new or same 'N' number? I assume I cannot get the repairman's certificate? Or, is there some way that I can do that? It looks like it would have to be an 'Experimental-Exhibition', according to a recent EAA article. However, I'm not certain if that is correct. I want to make a few modifications including installing an electric noselift that I currently have in my Cozy IV project. I'd also like to make a Roncz canard for it. Thanks, Neil D

As far as I know you cannot get the repairman's cert for sure but that is not a huge problem. You need an A&P to do the condition inspection but you can do all the work on it yourself as long as it's quality work and the A&P is willing to certify it is airworthy. As far as the paperwork, just call up your local FSDO and ask them how to proceed, in my experience they are very helpful. They will probably want a new 40 hour flight test period since the engine/prop has changed and probably a completely new airworthiness inspection.

You can reserve a number with the FAA and register a previously flying EZ on the FAA Registry with a new number, but I'd be sure they know what the prior number was. The new Airworthiness letter does give you so many more rights than the pre-2000 Airworthiness letter. If you'd like a sample, I can find it in my paperwork. Depending on where you are, a Designee can help you get through the paperwork and if they offer to help, they are worth the money. Where are you?

David tell me more about a "New airworthyness letter, what does it take to get one what does it allow the owner non builder to do that he can't with the original airworthyness letter? I have done several mods that may qualify as requirements to get either a new AWC or update the original, like electric front gear, electric pitch trim, electric Speed brake, new prop so what way do you recommend I go?
