Title: engine wanted
Post by: neild on March 11, 2013, 12:26:53 AM
I recently bought a Varieze without an engine. Looking for an 0-200 or a C90, used, high time okay. Thanks. Neil

Were it me, after over 30 years in canards, I'd go for O-235 rather. I wouldn't go below O-200 in hp. Anything in the C85 range is very hard to sell if you ever sell...
I try to track people selling things like engines, get in touch.

Neil, A C90 will also work fine. They actually can put out more power than an O-200. Their rated HP was at 2500 and the O-200 at 2800 RPM. That said, the either can produse much more power with compression and cam changes. They weigh less and most of the parts are less expensive. The O-235 has unequal length intake tubes, solid tappets and those are not something that are positives.

I too am not a fan of the O-235. I flew my Long about 700 hours with a factory new L2C and finally gave up and installed the "right" engine. The solid lifters, exhaust valves, and reduced cooling fin area on the heads don't play nice on an updraft pusher.
A light Varieze with small Conti is a joy to fly :)

What is the "right" engine for a LongEZ? Easyrider Don't forget Canards West www.canardswest.org

Exactly. Having built N26EZ (IO-360 B1E) with my dad it was evident N888EZ (O-320 D3G) was the right choice. I've built, owned and flown EZ's with O-235, O-320 and IO-360 power... sold the newer, IO-360 bird and kept the O-320 powered EZ.

I'm with Dick on the Long EZ - 160 hp O-320 is by far the best choice for Long EZ. On the Varieze it is a bit of a handful compared to the smaller O-200 and O-235...

I have a very nice low time O-235 with 9.5 : 1 High compression pistons that I'm probably going to put up for sale. Also have the matching prop and prop extension. I was fortunate and found a great " deal " from Paul Poberenzy on VERY low time rebuilt O-320 so I'm toolin' up for that engine. The O-235 -L2C has very few hours on it. A ferry pilot flew it from Arizona to Wisconsin and said it ran beautifully. I only flew it once since then. It's pickled and I have an air dryer pump going through the case. Dessicant plugs in the jugs. Pickeling oil in the case. Not sure what I need to get for it but I'm open to offers. It does not have a "sign-off" on the recent rebuild so that's the one catch. But it's for an experimental a/c anyway. Have yellow tags for most of the rebuilt components. Also logs.
