Hangar Flying / Tampa area hangar.
« on: August 14, 2007, 06:02:39 PM »
I'm having an idea. There are no hangars available for rent here. Or anywhere within 50 miles of here. Waiting lists are hundreds long. BUT, there is a large hangar here at Zephyrhills that rents by the quarter floor. Could fit up to 4 builders/planes there. Would work out to be $250 or so each. I'm one. Anyone else think they might want to consider this? Zephyrhlls is a bit north of Tampa, Florida. Just an abtract thought. 2 x  5000 ft runway, cheapest gas.

Hangar Flying / Florida

I live here in Florida, Zephyrhills. Is it in this area, that I can look at it for you? I'm still building, but near the end.

Hangar Flying / Build my confidence...please!
« on: August 05, 2007, 05:39:42 PM »
I'm sitting at home seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Painting is now about to start. Hangar is about to be available. Perhaps it will actually make noise and move soon. Hmmm....now I see it more clearly, I'm actually having some fears. A lot of my plane was built before I got her, though in a very basic form. Seems well built. Can't find any evidence of shoddy work, poor quality materials. Attention to detail is excellent. So why am I worried? Simple. With little to base my experiance on, I look at the 2 little pins and 2 bolts in the canard and think...is that really strong enough? The wings bolt on with 3 bolts....seems like way too weak. Now my dreams of flight drift into visions of losing a wing or canard, unable to get out of the spinning cockpit to open the chute.  I can find NO evidence of failure of this type. No NTSB reports (and I read all I could find)that talk of airframe failure. Is this a common fear?  I invite comments and encourage the mental support I'm hoping for. Its really illogical to think this way, but can't help it....help!!

For Sale/Wanted / 0-320 LE exhaust pipes wanted
« on: August 02, 2007, 11:16:00 AM »
I have a set of pipes off a Cessna but not the best for the EZ. Hal Hunts are very expensive, so before I sell another kidney to pay for them, anyone got any options laying around?

Hangar Flying / 0-320 engine baffles for Long EZ
« on: August 01, 2007, 01:09:34 PM »
Anyone got cutouts for the 0-320 engine updraft cooling baffles for the Long EZ?
My plans only come with the 0-235 standard ones, could use someones old cutouts if possible. Last construction hurdles under attack!!

Hangar Flying / Las Vegas area EZ...
« on: July 25, 2007, 09:40:35 PM »
I just had my first ride in one, as my own EZ is in the final stages of construction. I can tell you that the front pilot seat can be adapted to your size by altering the pedals and cockpit,  but the back one will be awfully tight, so if you get a ride, don't consider the tight squeeze  as unalterable fact. There is no option to allow for backseaters, but front....yes.

Hangar Flying / Need a hangar space
« on: July 23, 2007, 08:52:20 AM »
No luck on affordable hangars in my area. I am asking around, emailed a couple of people I have heard of locally, but I am looking for Canard owners that can, might, share a hangar space/cost,  in the Tampa area. Vandenburg, Zephyrhills, maybe Brooksville are good locations. Let me know soon, before I give up and try to finish under a shade hangar. (Only current option) Mostly just needs assembly and odds and end work.

Hangar Flying / How MINE's coming along.
« on: July 19, 2007, 03:21:07 PM »
The side panels have limited space, as the right side has the control run, the left is the trim servo and throttles. I have CHT, oil pressure, fuel pressure and voltmeter on the left armrest. This was my 3rd attempt at making the panel, and this incarnation seems well suited to my taste, which is what its all about. The Avmap works so well in use I love it, and I have discussed the issues with TRIO and a fix has been made. Will consider the toggles vs switch, but apples and oranges really. Panel space has always been an issues with EZ's.

Hangar Flying / New panel completed
« on: July 18, 2007, 07:15:03 PM »
Here is a pic of the new digital panel for my Long EZ project. It would be finished faster if I could find a hangar in my area, prob later this year.
Contains Dynon EFIS, dig navcom, only old thing is the AT50 transponder (not in the case here). Trio AP, Alt hold, Simple TCAS fitted as panel mount. New Avmap IV GPS installed as panel with autopilot feed. Fuel flow. There are engine gauges fitted to the armrests and I also used auto pillar mounts for egt and oil temp.  As I'm not using steam gauges for primary flight there is a backup power supply for the avionics bus.

Hangar Flying / Planning for the day
« on: July 07, 2007, 10:23:13 AM »
I still have some work to do yet, but its reasonable to say my bird will be ready within 12 months or less. I read about having an experianced pilot test it first, getting some back seat rides off other owners to familiarize myself with the plane. The thing is, I don't know anyone in my area to ask such a thing, can't imagine someone wanting to fly an EZ they didn't build, never having known me or my skills. And I've NEVER flown in any canard, let alone an EZ, nor do I know anyone to ask. Is it unreasonable to do it all myself? I see no real options but to do so. I'v had good responces to online questions, but don't feel I know anyone well enough to ask for rides or first flights.
 Anyone else done this alone?

Hangar Flying / Follow up on gear and brake.
« on: June 07, 2007, 11:55:46 AM »
Got my gear and air brake installed. Only gear issue was a stuck "down" switch that threw me for awhile. Otherwise the Wright gear seems fine and I'm impressed with its build quality. The $98 Ebay actuator I got for my airbrake also seems a easy retrofit. The limit switches do a good job and a simple stick switch to a relay board gives great results. Total cost $110. Not bad. I also switched my panel to aluminum and mounted an Avmap EKP IV next to my Dynon Efis. oooooo,  that looks cool. I had to mount some gauges in the arm rests to make room, but will all look good once complete. I'm a stickler for cockpit happiness and want it to be my dream spot for years to come. Wil post some oics once complete for referance.

Hangar Flying / How MINE's coming along.
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:25:20 PM »
First of all, let me say I'm not trying to steer anyone here. My only experiance with this is my current installation of a Wright made gear. Just thought I'd throw in a point. The glasswork is really a minimal piece that takes maybe 60 mins. The whole thing could be done in a weekend and uses the same holes as before for mounting. I don't know about other systems, but I chose this one using my limited knowlege but I'm quite happy. Steve has continued to improve the system as time has gone on  and maintains a very high quality.
Just wanted to share info.

Thought I'd jump in and reply to that. I am right now fitting a Steve Wright electric gear on my near completed Long EZ. So far its been simple job though I'm early into it. It does not seem like a hard job and mine was completely built using original manual crank, so its like a flying plane  being converted. I can follow up as I finish, but it wont be long. I anticipate it taking just one more workday, two total. Minor glasswork, simple tools.

Hangar Flying / linear actuators/electric gear source.
« on: May 20, 2007, 12:36:05 PM »
Just an Ebay store called wizardautomotive. They have a pic or I can take one. I havn't started installation yet, but will prob post something on it. I want to promote more recent postings on these things as many are from history using hard to find parts. I personally like the unit, its light and functions very well on the bench. Auto stop limit switches built in.
Will follow up. Price bid $98 or buy it now for $104. I have no connection with the store outside of buying from them.
