Hangar Flying / Starter Wires
« on: July 11, 2007, 05:40:28 PM »
I am getting ready to order a B&C Electric Starter for my VariEZe project.
I am still in the building phase, but tired of Hand-Proping.

My question is what gage wire to use, or better yet what gage wire I can get away with?

Also, are their any Light Weight options? Like a type of wire that may be expensive, but will shave a pound or two off the installation?

Hangar Flying / IVO Prop
« on: October 16, 2006, 04:58:39 PM »
You might want to check with Frank Pullano, he flew an IVO electric variable pitch prop for years on his VariEZe.

Frank is well known in the canard community, and he used to race his EZ all the time.

I think Frank will tell you that he had good results with his IVO, both performance and longevity.

Cost wise, you can’t go wrong with a good wood prop.

Hangar Flying / Cables
« on: July 20, 2006, 06:07:30 AM »
Drew,

Which CSA article was the one that had the information on switching the cables?

I also have the Ken Brock throttle, how ever my cables are multi-strand, spiral wound type.

Are you saying you were able to switch the multi-strand over to solid shaft cables?

Spruce sells the Bowden, Solid Wire Ends cable for $1.50 per Ft. PN/05-15500. Is this what you used?

If this is the case, I would definitely be interested, and I wouldn't have a need for return cables.

Hangar Flying / Spring
« on: July 14, 2006, 07:38:29 AM »
Charles,

I did consider the Push-Pull cables, and I would agree. it's a better configuration in comparison to cable & spring.

However, the PP cables aren't cheap, and significantly heavier than the Cable and Spring Config., and I imagine you would have to change the throttle control head.

I configured mine with dual-springs from different anchor points giving me a redundant system I am very comfortable with.

I am posting several photos of other VE's spring return configurations I saw at the 2006 Sun & Fun on my web page ( Construction Log / Return Springs).

I guess the point is, there's several ways to skin a cat, and their all good as long as they a safe.

Hangar Flying / Ace
« on: July 13, 2006, 08:29:41 PM »
Delta-Mike is correct;

Ace Hardware has an excellent selection.
If you don't have one near by, you can order via the web, by logging into acehardwareoutlet.com

In the search window, type in "SPRING" and you will get approx 10 pages of the various springs they sell.

I would venture to say; Ace has more On-line than in the local stores, unless you're lucky enough to have a large Ace Hardware in your area.

I just re-did my return springs, and found it difficult to find the exact length and tension for my 0-200 application.

My solution was to incorporate a, Spring / Cable combination.

I found a spring I liked, (good length and tension) and made a cable with swaged ends to close the gap. The spring that was previously on, had way too much tension and would cause the throttle and mixture to creep.

Hangar Flying / 0-200 EGT
« on: July 11, 2006, 04:17:16 AM »
Getting ready to install my EGT probes.  I have a continental 0-200, and I have conflicting information on the distance from the cylinder head.

I have searched high and low on the web for the correct distance.

The last information I had was 4 inches from the cylinder head, after the 1st bend.

I am also interested in hearing what a good EGT range is for an 0-200.

Thanks,

Hangar Flying / Congrats on new VE
« on: June 21, 2006, 05:53:55 AM »
Eric,

Congrats on your new VE, and making that long Cross Country safely.

Is it powered by an 0-200?

Look forward to seeing you fly into TMB or FXE.

Hangar Flying / Buy=Fly Build=Wait
« on: May 18, 2006, 07:24:13 AM »
Steve,

I think, and I hope you will get that ride. The canard community is small in comparison to GA, but very close. Anyone out there with a Vez or LEZ, knows what it was like prior to having their own plane.

I got my first ride in a Long EZ while on vacation in San Antonio from an Old-Timer named Skip Barchfield. I looked up the local EAA in that area, found out the Chapter had a canard driver and I asked him for a ride.

The above post is correct in that you should have your checkbook ready because in a work the ride was “INCREDIBLE.” In addition to having a control stick in the back, Skip also had a throttle control that allowed me to make power changes.

My only advice is for you to be aware of the below math equation:

BUY NOW = FLY NOW
BUILD NOW = FLY ?

There are clear advantages to both approaches; however as a builder I can tell you the things most builders will never say:

1) I have too much time to work on my project
2) I have too much space to work on my project
3) I have too much money, and I can’t invest it all in my project
4) My wife/girlfriend has never given me a hard time about my project

Good luck, and welcome to the world of canards.

Hangar Flying / Stratomaster Instruments
« on: April 19, 2006, 07:14:52 AM »
I am ready to install my panel, or at least I think I am. Lots of thought and ideas to consider. I know a lot of canarders  are installing the very popular Dynon EFIS, and in some cases the very good, but expensive Blue Mountain EFIS. I didn’t have the budget for either, but wanted a glass panel, so I opted to go with the Stratomaster system.

No Color, but the screen was big and the features plentiful. Once I get everything wired up I will add some photos to the web.

I was interested to know if anyone had any experience with Stratomaster instruments?

Hangar Flying / Slick Start Booster
« on: March 15, 2006, 07:11:47 AM »
I am getting very close to firing up my 0-200, that I am proud to say is bolted to my VariEZe.

I have decided not to install a starter for now, weight, cost, and Rutans recommendations were the basis for this decision.

I have some hand propping experience, having had a Gyrocopter years ago that was Subaru powered, and had to be hand propped.

Being a pusher, like the VariEZe, I never had a problem, or a close call for that matter.

In the future after I get tired of Hand propping, I may install a Light Weight starter, but for right now, I am anticipate going with this configuration.

I am however interested in installing a “SLICK-START” Magneto booster, and I was hoping to get some feedback from anyone that may have experience with this device.

I also would like some feedback on anyone that Hand Props their VariEZe.

Hangar Flying / Sun & Fun
« on: February 16, 2006, 06:17:13 PM »
If you’re interested in Canards and you live in S. Florida, then Sun & Fun is the place to go.

Every year they have lots of canards that fly into the show. You can see State of the art Velocity’s and compact VariEZes’. The people are great and the information exchange is plentiful.

I was there last year and decided that I really wanted one of these truly unique machines. I purchased a project shortly after the show, and anticipate being in the air this summer.

Good luck, and look forward to seeing you at Sun & Fun

Hangar Flying / Ebay buying
« on: January 27, 2006, 07:43:23 PM »
Put several a Bids on the Spider box I need on Ebay and I thought I was getting a good deal, $175.00 for something that cost $249.00 via Spruce. I didn’t win the bid because with 50 seconds left, someone out bid me.

I learned that you can get good deals on Ebay, but you have to be aware of how it works, and better yet how the people you are biding against work.

Good advice to anyone that is to try something on Ebay is to try and buy outright if they give you the opportunity and the price is right. The other is to monitor the bid closely right up to the last second and be ready to press the bid button at the last possible second.

Thanks to the info I got from you guys, I discovered two more spiders on Ebay.
Will let everybody know how things work out in 4 Days 3 hours and 48 Seconds, I am going to monitor this one closely.

Hangar Flying / e-bay
« on: January 20, 2006, 09:10:06 AM »
I found the intake spider on E-Bay and I put a BID on it.

I'll let you know how it works out in 6 Days.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

I am a member of CSA and I am hoping someone with the Carbon Ram-Air Filter housing goes to Sun & Fun, so I can take a good look at the installation.
