Hangar Flying / Cozy Emergency
« on: September 20, 2005, 10:31:37 AM »
Dare I say it
Here's another example of modifying Burt's plans.
The original concept was years of developement and research.
I bet there are more gear up landings with electrical gears than manual.
I have been tempted to go electric speed and nose gear but reading the forums I'll stay vintage Burt.

Hangar Flying / P/E-Mags
« on: September 20, 2005, 10:23:49 AM »
I went thru. 3 P-Mags and had quite an experience flight testing them.
What I don't understand is people are supposed to be running them with no problems, which points to a production problem, although the 3 I had gave the same symptoms, missfiring when hot and under load.
I am back on 2 old slicks and I need to make a decision on what to do.
1 Electoair/Lightspeed and a slick replacement. The favored choice is one electronic and one Mag.

Hangar Flying / P-Mag

Snappy
My problems were with the P-Mag.I was intending to get an E-Mag to replace the other mag but after all the troubles decided to stay with Slicks.
One suggestion for you guys fitting P/E-Mags, fit an electronic Tach. in my case it always gave indications of impending problems.

Hangar Flying / Elecrtonic Ignition
« on: August 22, 2005, 06:16:27 PM »
I went thru. 3 P-Mags and finally returned to Slick Magnetos.
The problems were mainly missfiring after about 20 mins. running.
The first indications were electronic tach. giving spurious readings, then the missfire would start.
Brad Dement at P-Mag is great to work with and I think they will have a good product but I was not prepared to test fly it.

Hangar Flying / Dan Patch
« on: August 21, 2005, 12:23:13 PM »
The first thing I always did when signing on to EZ Squadron was to look for Dan's postings or replies, they were always informative and fair, but alas no more. Although I never met Dan, I always intended to, I felt as though I knew him.
It is a great loss to the EZ community and my condolences to his family and many friends.

Does anyone have experience of the new Jeff Rose Elecronic Ignition?
Jeff sold his business to a new company and I wondered if anyone is using the new system. I ran one of the older systems for a while before I went thru the P-Mag experience.I'm running 2 Slicks that are ready for replacement and I'm going thru the "shall I go electronic" phase.
Cheers

Hangar Flying / Flight training

I transfered to a LongEZ after about 150 hrs in Cessna 150/182.
I strongly recommend getting complex and high performance endorsements.I flew in the back seat from Dallas to Columbia(O22) California with a "ferry" pilot.
We then went to 10,000 ft. runway and I was in the front seat flying the canard, not taking off. Once you get used to the pitch sensitivity of the LongEZ you don't over-rotate on take off.
I since have 280 hrs. on the LongEZ and every flight is a pleasure.

Hangar Flying / GPS antenna location
« on: May 04, 2005, 02:20:05 PM »
I have 3 GPS in my LongEZ( I don't have any VOR)
The Garmin 296 antenna is in the Pilot's headrest
The Appollo GX55 panel mount antenna is on the front access panel in the airflow, nice short co-ax run.
The Garmin Pilot III antenna is the standard unit that comes with the GPS.
I use the Pilot III as a backup and a nav. aid for the passenger when flying from the back seat. It beats keep saying 5deg. left/right every 2 mins.

Hangar Flying / EZ Brakes
« on: April 30, 2005, 11:03:21 AM »
Definately put heat shields on your gear legs and shield the nylon brake lines from the gear legs to the brake calipers.
Metallic brake linings need bedding in, taxi at 40 to 50 mph and apply the brakes hard to a stop. Do this 2/3 times allowing cool down between applications. With brakes hard on run engine to max power, the aircraft should not creep forward. These are the instructions from a Rapco brake lining kit.

There is a web site detailing the up coming Canard Flyin West

Columbia is a fabulous airport nestling in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 3 miles north of Sonora. The local authentic 1850's western mining town is within walking distance of the airport. There are plenty of good eating places and a "Gem" of a motel 1/2 mile away.
Come join us for a fabulous weekend of Canard Experience.
