Hangar Flying / Re: Nose Lift
« on: October 15, 2016, 02:04:30 PM »
First I apologize for not reading this question sooner.   I have a LOT of experience on Nose Gears.
(1) I broke 7 teeth off the original RAF large gear.   I just turned it over to fix it.   Friend of mine did the same strip-the-gear.  His accident was the THIRD time that Longeze gear had been damaged.   I gave him my old gear.   CozyGirrrls have them for $300.
(2) I am too old to manage with the manual gear so I bought a Wright Nose Gear.   I may have had the last Wright NG and I was the 3rd owner.    Looking at the work necessary terrified me so I sold it at a loss.   Before I sold it I was offered $350 for PART of it that failed on their aircraft.   Finally got a $1000.   I think it is a good unit BUT I did not want to move my radio or cut a hole in the F22 bulkhead that holds the canard on the airplane - GEEEEZ.   The real killer was that I had to do some structural fiberglassing.  I have NO interest in structural fiberglassing.
(3) I bought a Wilhelmson Nose Gear unit AND the autoextension unit.  Big $$$$.
I am delighted to have it now working.   But I had every problem that anyone can have in the installation and there are MANY.
Is it an older longeze?  If so, you will have to cut the 5/8" bolt that is at the top of the gear.   Do you own a 90 degree attachment for your electric drill?   They are cheap; get one.
Other problems?    Just email me direct.  TOO many to discuss here.

DON'T Misread me; I am delighted to have the gear.   But my hair is much whiter now.
I did have to return the wiring to Jack twice.   My fault entirely.   Jack gives EXCELLENT service to back you up.
Final:  I think Jack's NG is the ONLY choice now; the Wright NG may be gone forever.  I don't know that.

Don't email stuff to Jack just as a hurricane comes through.   UPS did a 2 day delivery in 9 days.  :'(

My Longeze is not currently flying due to mistakes that I have to correct.

I have NO business advising others how to do anything.

I would like to help others but I really don't have the knowledge or ability.

Thanks to those who have pointed that out to me.

I would be careful to drain ALL of the gasoline AND be certain all of the fumes
are gone, too.

Do you know how to do that?

There are experts who should have already told you on this site.

I just finished exactly the same job.  The sight gauge is far from the firewall.

Vance provides very good directions.    I would make some suggestions, tho.

For Sale/Wanted / Wright nose gear retraction/extension kit
« on: April 18, 2015, 09:39:23 AM »
Guys:

Wright Nose Gear Extension/retraction kit
Used, supposedly, but it looks great.    I
think it was never completely installed; I
just see some tiny scratches.   You can see
pictures at EZJets Inc. website.

$1,200 OBO.  That is $300 or $350 under the
new price and over $700 under the other
(Wilhelmson) price.

For Longeze.   Too heavy for a Varieze.

I recommend that you install it when you
are in Chapter 13 or, at least, before Chapter
21.     I do NOT recommend you retrofit but
Valerie at EZJets Inc. does install new ones
as retrofits; maybe you could hire Valerie or
someone to install it.

You may find that you have to relocate the radio
and transponder if those are already installed.
It must be done before the panel and before
electrical wiring (I moved all of my wires before
I gave up).

Thank you VERY much

Hangar Flying / Re: Landing training at OSH
« on: July 19, 2014, 09:00:03 AM »
Hi Rick

Thanks for the email.   I have flown in once as a passenger.  I also have flown out of OSH to a smaller field nearby.  We did several practice landings there with no problem.   The trouble is:  the guy who was doing that for pay no longer does it.  Due to insurance, I think.   I was not his best student.   Maybe he quit due to me?   Anyway I need the experience; may have to get it here in WA state.

I am a volunteer so am VERY busy; I may see you at the CozyGirrrl's spegetti meal.

Hangar Flying / Landing training at OSH
« on: July 18, 2014, 06:23:59 PM »
Hi Group

I now have a Longeze that is airworthy as far as we can
determine.  It has flown 3 times and probably will fly
tomorrow.  We corrected a couple of minor problems.

Now the problem is me.   I will be at Oshkosh most or all
of the "Airventure" week.  2 friends are taking their C-182.
I would certainly appreciate any ride that I can get.  I
had some training in landing about 5 - 6 years ago.  The
two pilots that would do that for pay do not do it any more.
I can pay for gas or whatever is needed.

I also have to do my BFR in August.  Maybe I can do that
at the same time or in someone's C-152, 172, etc.  I
have done a few landings recently in my Ercoupe but do
not really feel current, even in the Ercoupe.  Otherwise
I can do the BFR here in my Ercoupe.

Thank you for any comments and/or referrals.

Do you have an owner's manual?   Look around page 27 -30 (I am working from memory).
What are the changes to cause a lower fuel capacity?   Why were the changes made; that
will make it a bit difficult to get ultimate accuracy but the manual should be a lot of help.

I want to repeat:

Talk with Burrall Saunders instead of unknown people like me.   He is a RECOGNIZED expert on
canards/composites.

As I said, several people have had unfortunate incidents with that starter.
Waste of money...   :'(

Hi

I know very little about the Skytec starter EXCEPT that some people who used them were
very unhappy with the failure rate.  I suggest that you contact Burrall Saunders for some
more concrete information.   I think his business address is in the home page of this website.
He certainly is very experienced with any canard issues.   He checks into canard-aviators (at) yahoogroups(dot)com pretty often.   Others on that website had reported poor results for
the Skytec.  Nobody has complained about the B & C.   I have one.

You might try posting on "canard-aviators@yahoogroups.com"

I have the impression that there are about 10 times as many experts on it.  I know nothing about
magnetos although I have one Slick.

STOP!

Have you considered how you will get the wiring out to the nav. lights?  You have to unplug them
somewhere when you take the wings off.   Also you have to put the strobe system somewhere.
Where will you put yours?  Farther from the radio may mean less RF interference.

Why do you need a couple of gallons more?   You have to land to PEE sometime.
Dick Rutan needed extra fuel because he was going to fly around the world.   Do you plan
to be another Dick Rutan?   Better think again....

People that make changes in the plans always end up with a mess.  I know that because I
made some small changes.   Not good.

Hi Newby

It would be nice to know your name.   Anyway, the FIRST thing you should do is join the CSA.
That will give you a directory of 893 members as of Jan.   There are about 97 of them in CA.
I don't know if Cottonwood, CA or Port Hueneme, CA is in the San Francisco area or not.

You also get the Jan., April, and July issues.  Oct should be here.   Maybe it is; I don't remember.

The value of the directory alone is worth the $30 cost.   You can even order back issues  of the newsletter.  You can go through the directory and find every Eracer guy that is flying and every
one that is building.

Information on the CSA is on this website.

Go for it.

HI jamie

Terry Schubert is editor, printer, stapler, postage clerk, etc.   Send him $30 (for 2013)(you get the directory, April, and July newsletters
in a bundle).   He is at 9283 Lindbergh Blvd,  Olmsted Falls, OH   44138-2407    Make the check out TO HIM, not CSA.   If there is any
problem, send an email to jschuber@juno.com    Yes, that is jschuber  NOT jschubert.    Juno has a  reason.

After you read a few, you may want to order newsletters from 2012 or even older.  He has them.
