Hangar Flying / linear actuators/electric gear source.
« on: May 19, 2007, 08:54:23 AM »
Just got a Steve Wright nose gear kit (He delivered personally as he was in my area). Got to see his Stagger EZ.  Not fully fitted yet, but looks like a straightforward job. Nicely put together, no complex skills required, great quality.
I found an Ebay source for actuators and bought a 4 inch one for less than a hundred bucks that looks great. plenty strong enough and light. I connected to power and ran it back and forth, should be an easy fit to make the brake electric. If interested, will post details.

Hangar Flying / In referance to above fuel injetion....
« on: May 13, 2007, 03:42:40 PM »
This thread got me thinking. My engine has yet to be run, but it is an IO-320 and already has the Lycoming fuel injection. I placed an adequate pressure auxiliary fuel in the system, (before the gascolator per forum suggestion) Am I to understand I use the pump ONLY momentarily to prime or run it as part of the take off procedure until airborne and climbing? Also part of the landing checklist to run it?

Hangar Flying / Alum vs steel mounts
« on: May 13, 2007, 07:55:39 AM »
Glad to hear aluminum still being OK. I'm changing the top fittings to stainless steel, but was going to leave the bottom ones due to the risk of damaging the sumps in the the removal process. All the alum ones are
1 1/2 by 1 inch, the taller vertical web you mentioned. My concern was actually that to get the mount accurately pointed to the rear left me with one engine mount leg connected with a single bolt, no room to place a second. I wasn't comfortable with 7 bolts instead of 8!! I'm going to try to use a laser to set the angles right.  The plans don't really discuss how to do this, but lasers wern't around in the 80's.

Hangar Flying / How MINE's coming along.
« on: May 12, 2007, 02:43:27 PM »
Love this site, but not a lot of people posting. I thought I'd add some reading material about my own EZ, maybe a few others might provide the same.
I bought one partially built last year, along with lots of odds and ends, pieces and a well worn and epoxy spattered set of plans. I have an early version it seems, it has the old male inlet. Never heard of the female EZ till I saw one at Sun n Fun. These forums, (and the other canard sites) are a great souce of info. I spend many a spare moment reading and learning. Each night I dream of flying my own. (never been flying in one yet). I sweat the details, rebuilding things I'm not 100% happy with. I'll complete a section and later find something here that says, "gotta redo it, that won't work". I'm on my 3rd instrument panel, and changing the mounts now from Aluminium to steel for the heavier 0-320. There is so much I don't know, fear pervades me at times, thinking I'll miss something that will be my undoing down the road. I read the accident reports, learn from others faults and sometimes their demise. After so many years, there are no local builders near me, few used (or new) parts, not too many people to ask questions of, or look at their planes in person. Sometimes I regret even starting it all, but we all need a dream, and despite the constant stream of money and a thousand things to do, it remains my biggest reason to go to work in the morning.
Fortunately I am supported in the dream by my long suffering wife who never fails to encourage me, just another reason for me to appreciate her.
One day I will join you in the skies and I will get to feel the joy of canard flight. Lets all keep up with the postings and encourage these often complex and difficult projects.

Hangar Flying / Need engine mount help. Dynafocal 2.
« on: October 18, 2006, 03:27:03 PM »
My Long EZ project is coming along, although I have a bum back and its slow going. My great engine deal of a IO-320 has a slight mount problem. It requires a Dynafocal type 2 mount, as it came off a Twin Comanche, , and I have not been able to find one from any junkyard, nor any welder willing to make me one. I have the original 0-235 mount and a dynafocal 2  ring but can't seem to find a way to blend the two. I invite any help in solving this problem, as all my efforts so far have produced nothing. I live in the Tampa Florida area.

Hangar Flying / Thisis what the forum is for....!
« on: September 01, 2006, 07:00:24 PM »
Thanks for all the comments. It is incredibly useful to hear different viewpoints that expand our knowledge of issues we face.
For me, I was advised to, and encouraged by, MOST of the people who responded. My own reasons were simply that, I knew I would fly a lot with my wife, baggage for trips, and preferred a reasonable avionics set up. The thought of an 0-235 struggling with the duty made me want to play it safe and get a beefier motor to help me along. I intend to limit gross weight and am being sensible about CG and fuel loads, but essentially, it just made sense to go the 0-320 route from the get-go.  Now all I have to do is finish it! Anyone got a Dynafocal Type 2 mount to spare?? How about a budget transponder?

Hangar Flying / OK, got the plane in the garage..whats this bit for??
« on: August 31, 2006, 05:17:37 PM »
Now installed at home, I'm going through the plans and the plane. Couple of odd things. The rudder pedals have brake cylinders attached to them in the nose, but the plans call for them on the firewall. Is this a mod of some sort?
Also, the canard seems longer than plans. How can I tell if its an upgraded style?
I got an I0-320 and not sure if I need a mod for the prop. And what kind of prop to put on? Cruise type works for me, but not sure what to shop for.
If you have a similar aircraft, let me know your set up. Thanks to all, help me get this thing in the air!

Hangar Flying / I have joined the ranks, thanks to all who helped.
« on: August 24, 2006, 01:08:55 PM »
I am now the owner of a 90% built Long EZ, and also got an 0I-320 Lycoming as well for the back end. I will shortly be installing the beast into my workshop where I will likely be found often when not eating/sleeping and doing other things not as important. I will undoubtably be picking various brains to get it flying. Watch this space........and if you have spare bits I could use? Let me know. (avionics, instruments, propeller etc.) :D

Hangar Flying / So you want to buy a partial built Long Ez.....
« on: August 20, 2006, 06:39:21 AM »
Thanks to all. I'm not without experiance, I was a field engineer for many tears, owned and rebuilt a fibreglass sailboat for instance. My potential  buy  has a complete fuselage to the firewall, and complete wings built proffessionally by some guy named John Queener, whom I can find little info except that he has done work on Cozy's et al as well. Much of the structure is visible and I feel its built well. I'm trying to get the present owner (an older guy in his seventies) to help me find the other builders. He seems short on memory but I don't think its deliberate! I'm going to search his paperwork (has the plans he says) and see if I can glean some info. If anyone is in the Broosville, Pasco county area I could use the help. (Think hernando county airport.) I have some leads on local builders but yet have to make contact. Assuming all is well, how do you get it certified once done?

Hangar Flying / So you want to buy a partial built Long Ez.....
« on: August 19, 2006, 07:50:17 AM »
Me too, as I've posted before. I have one almost in my grasp. I'm hoping not to screw up and get a lemon, so......here's the current question.
There are no builder logs or access to the person who built the fuselage. Will this be an issue come time to get it signed off for flight, etc? I see no referance to this in postings. I don't want to invest in a kit thats built well but can't be flown due to paperwork concerns. Its all open for inspection still, should I be concerned??
Thanks to all, hope this serves as help for others like me.

Hangar Flying / 0-235 vs 0-360 for Long Eze.
« on: August 15, 2006, 07:14:19 PM »
Silly me, I meant the 0-320 of course. It comes down to me wanting to not mess with Rutans original plan of using the 0-235,  but it seems most prefer the 0-320. I will be buying soon so now is the time to know whats best. This forum is the source of knowledge for so many of us I hope others will learn from my questions too.

Hangar Flying / 0-235 vs 0-360 for Long Eze.
« on: August 15, 2006, 11:25:43 AM »
What is the opinion of using the 0-235 over the 0-360 Lycoming.?
I am about to choose which one to go with. Apprieciate any input from owner-pilots.
Thanks!

Hangar Flying / Sport Flight/ John Queener-comments?
« on: August 15, 2006, 11:23:49 AM »
I'm looking at buying a mostly built kit of a Long eze, with wings built by John Queener of Brooksville, Sport Flight. I have been told of his reputation and wing work as poor quality.
I have no knowlenge of him,  and invite comment, before I commit to buy. I am only looking for confidence in a product I will be putting my life into, so forgive the blunt question.

Hangar Flying / New buyer/looker am I
« on: August 08, 2006, 04:23:57 PM »
Well, the more I research, the more confused I get.  Let me see if I have some facts right.
I have to build 51% or better to be considered the manufacturer and therefore can do most maintenance and repair.
If I buy a partially build kit without an official set of plans, is it illegal to finish?
How do you learn to fly one once you built it? And how do you get it legal and in the air? I'm sure many potential builders ask this, just looking for the answers before I sink my $$$ into one!
