Here is a couple of more suggestions

Use the thicker washers under the head and nut on the bolts on the ailerons. This is to insure the nut is not bottoming out on the threads. This can be misleading. A bolt that is bottoming out on the threads will "feel" tight.

Remove the prop completely and run the engine. It will not hurt to do this. Don't go to MAX RPM however.
If the vibration disappears you can then narrow down your search.

Take off the prop and rotate it 90 degrees & remount. See if the harmonic changes.
Process of elimination. The harmonic is rprobably related to rotation. It changed when you went from a 3" to 8" extension. These are rotating elements.

I own the plane at Schaumburg. It has been outside since June 1986. Hangars are 300+per month. I pay $80 for the tie down.
For the last 22 years I have save over 60K on the difference.

It is no show plane but has stood up to the Chicago weather conditions very well. Do a goggle search on N 721EZ and judge for yourself.

It could also be the friction spring on the trim control is loose.

I had this happen. You set the trim and then a gust knocks it off & you have to retrim.

Try tightning the  trim spring.

Hangar Flying / prop FOD

There is a sound reason why metal props are not used. It is in one of the Canard Pusher issues. Something to do with the pulses created by the way air hits the pusher prop. It is not the same as a prop out in front with clean air.

On the back end the metal props fatigued where the wood flexed with the pulses. Someone else could explain this better.

Looks like the prop is repairable, don't get too down.

If it did that it was a large obstruction that hit it.

Does anybody know for sure what brand supplies their gas without alcolhol in it.

Some driver I hear have used auto fuel in thier EZ's for several years. I would like to know what brands they found without the alcolhol

Whoa Whoa, slowdown a minute

The Great American prop had multiple laminations and would take the extra torque.

It is not the bolt size that determines the torque, remember you are tightening against wood, not steel.

I have two props as well. On the Great American I tighten to 25 ft/lbs.
I also have a prop with only six laminations. This, I tighten to 18 ft/lbs.
Any more and you will start to crush the wood.

Do this in 5 ft/lb increments and lube the threads with wax. Make sure the bolt turns easily in the bolt hole.

Great American said no more than 300 in/lbs, no matter what the diameter of the bolt is.

I know what you mean by a sick feeling. I lost a brake line just on touchdown and used the rudders to steer between applying the brakes. I noticed that by pumping the effected brake I was able to get enough pressure to get some stopping action. When I pulled off the runway, the corrupted brake no longer worked.

I replaced the Nylon lines in the plans with Aeroquip hose.

The thing was to not panic.

Hangar Flying / Canard Empty Weights

Earlier I posted on another forum, a messsage calling for a survey of canard empty weights. The result was that information started pouring in. The initial information is really astounding and the results will be posted but I need a larger profile.

This is what I need. Type of plane, Vari, Long, Cozy. E racer etc.
Empty weight, Engine and any comments on how its decked out, nose lift, long nose, electric trim, battery size etc, anything that adds to the overall weight.

I have lots of Long EZ's and a few vari EZ's reporting in. Unfortunately
no Cozy's of any kind or other canards. If you have any of these planes I could use your data.

The idea is not to draw any scientific conclusions but to gather a comparitive data base to see where you stand or if your building, what to add to your plane.

Hangar Flying / Engine baffles

Just a point of consideration I have drooled over your downdraft modification for the last year or so. The berkut site is also very informative.

I am not quit prepared to go to downdraft yet as every teak I make to mine brings the temps down another notch or two. I built two ram type tunnels into the lower cowl for #3 & #4 cylinders. I still have a lot of leaks around the baffles that I am sure about and some ideas on better airflow through.

I just may have to wait untill spring & do as you suggest but inthe meantime some drawings would also help me get started

I am going to rebuild my engine baffles and am looking for for a copy
of the original drawings. I have the standard, not the sport flight cowls

I park outside and it is a little too cold to be tearing into the engine just now.

I could wait until spring and copy the
existing ones but I am looking for a winter project to get done before the spring.

I would appreciate any help I could get. Even if all you have is tracings of the original drawings.

I could not find them on the open EZ drawings

I tried to get an answer on the other forums so far but nothing yet
