Dennis, You should definitely take a drive down to Whiteman Airport (KWHP) and come visit with us sometime. We have 3 Vari's, 3 of the Nicest Long-EZ's you'll find, 3 velocities, and other projects in progress for you to check out. Plenty of knowledge, ideas, and experience to talk about too. Like James Redmon did on his Berkut, I used Thermo-Tec Aluminized heat barrier with adhesive backing. It's as simple as cutting out the pieces, sticking them on the wing, and filling in the seams with some red high-temp RTV. The material is about .010 thick and is supposed to be good for a couple thousand degrees. It took me about half an hour to do it all. ACS sells this stuff but you can also find it at auto parts stores and suppliers. It's a little pricey.. you'll probably spend $50 between the thermo-tec and the silicone, but it makes for a very quick and easy job that looks great. It was very clever of James to come up with this... Good Work :-).

This is a pretty typical Ray Allen/electric trim installation on an EZ-type aircraft. On my Berk-EZ I'm planning on mounting the servo in a similar fashion but using the "Wright/Hanka" spring set up. You can see a description of that on Wayne Hick's Cozy site here:

I would still keep the stick on the right too. I'm severely right handed and have no problem flying with my left hand in a spam can. I'll also be just fine with the stick in my left hand whenever I build a Cozy sometime in the future. If you're in or near Southern Ca., please come over to Whiteman airport and visit us. We have a few longs, varis, velocities.. at all stages of building and flying.. lots to look at. If you're long distance I'll share what I have with pictures and email. My Berk-EZ (bigger/badder Long-EZ that echoes many Berkut ideas and parts) is a great example of the many mods and developments that have been incorporated into the design. Here is the short list:

Berkut nose
Berkut cowls
Berkut canopy
nose-mounted brakes (horizontal)
Wide fuselage
Aluminum Inst. panel
IO-320 fuel injected/electronic Ignition/ 4x4 pipes
High performance rudders/sheared lower winglets
Main gear strut fairings/LSE wheelpants
Trailing edge wing fences
Bill Allen style steel roll-bar
EFIS cockpit/all electric components

Aaahhhh you're going to make me do a little research here ;-). Time to brush up.. I'm digging around and doing reading now to remind myself of why I want to put the LSE Ignition on the top plugs. Off the top of my head, I want to say that Klaus recomends running on the top if you are running one elec ignition and one mag. Now.. time to find out "why" again.
