Title: How does finishing a project work?

I am thinking of looking for a project to finish, but I have a few questions. I want to get a project that I can get my name on.
Few things
How does it work if you buy a project that is mostly mid way through to almost finished?
What about a refurbishing project, one that has been flying but is stripped down to nothing and is being redone? How would I go about finishing it legally, and can I become the repairman on it?

My opinion (or cover my butt ;) )
Only one Repairman's cert given to an experimental, not transferable.
If you buy a stripped project, good luck getting a Repairman's.
If your project is 'bare', and you find a substantial # of items in need of correction/repair before final paint/DAR inspection, document everything... everything. Every dis-assembly, every repair, every ... Then submit for a Repairman's. Worst they can say is no.
Since these are experimental, you can do anything on your aircraft, anything. Issue is signing off the annual condition inspection. And/or major airframe modification, which will require an additional 'test' phase.
