Hangar Flying / Re: Need Help from cozy or eracer builders
« on: May 24, 2012, 09:24:49 AM »
Where are you building it (Cozy? or Eraser?)

Maybe there is another builder a  mile or 10 miles from you.
ON LOCATION help is much better than throwing out a question to guys who may or may not be
expert.  How do you know any of us are experts?
.
Do you belong to the CSA?   Terry Schubert sends out a directory every Jan.  $30
If you cannot afford $30/year, you cannot build your (whatever you are building, you did
not say).   ???

Hi Eric

A good place to ask questions is canard-aviators@yahoogroups.com      There are a lot of
canard builders and flyers on that website.

Also you should join CSA.  It is $30 per year.  When you join, you will get the Jan. issue, April
issue and a directory.   With the directory you can find most of the guys that are building.
Also you can find the people that have flying airplanes already by checking the column on
the number of hours on the airplane.   His address is 9283 Lindbergh Blvd.  Olmsted Falls, OH
44138-2407    You might consider buying some back issues, too.  They probably will be useful.

Terry has written the newsletter for a jillion years.   He just about breaks even with all the
paper, ink, stamps, etc. etc.  There is a board but CSA is essentially Terry.   He is VERY
knowledgeable but not an engineer.

Hi Eric

I thought my project looked pretty good until I talked with others who really are expert.  Is your
canard pilot friend an expert?   How do you know?

IMHO there are about 6 people in the entire country that I would trust.  If you are near one of them,
you could pay to have an expert opinion.   So where do you live and some of us can recommend an
expert, or who we think is expert.

PTMW Aeropoxy claims to be a structural epoxy.

E-Z Poxy claims to be equivalent to Safe-T-poxy.

Poly Epoxy claims to be "tougher and stronger".

I don't know; I am a microbiologist.   ;)

"One gallon should be plenty..."

If only that was true.  I don't remember how many gallons but it was far more than one.   :(

There was more than one "sandable" primer gallons, then more than one ordinary primer gallons,
then the top coat.  Maybe $1000 worth.

And it all adds weight.

Hi Afif

I believe that Ken Miller carries those bald nose tires.    At least I got mine from him.
See this website for his address or phone.

If you need to find CSA information, go to this website (WWW.EZ.ORG) and click on
the 2nd tab from the right.

Hi Whoever you are:

Please sign your name on posts.   Anyway I assume that you are not in the CSA.
If you were, you would not have needed to post your request.   Just call or
email the Texas state representative for CSA.   Bob Sudderth must know someone
that can help.   He is far from Houston but I think he knows someone.   Try
903-569-3028 or BSUDDERTH@JUNO.COM

BTW Join the CSA  $30/year.   The directory alone is worth $30 and you get 4
newsletters as well.

The annual directory alone is worth the $30.   In addition you get 4 newsletters and pictures.
How much do you pay for gas for 1 hour?   GEEEEZZZZ

Do you want everyone in the world access to pictures of our airplanes??????

Hi Waldo

There are a canard people who do not pay for CSA.   Why that is true, I have never understood   ???
Terry went to a lot of trouble accumulating those pictures.  Why should he let those who don't
pay for the CSA enjoy looking at the pictures?

Other people who are NOT canard pusher people would have access to the pictures if there was
no codeword.

I think the system is reasonable.

Hangar Flying / Re: Move the battery????????
« on: November 24, 2011, 12:30:17 AM »
If you decide to try moving the battery, think about this:

The battery is very heavy.   If you should crash, you stop VERY quickly.
Do you want the battery breaking away from  whatever straps hold it
down?   Are those TLAR straps or are you an engineer that can calculate
the stress?

Whatever weight advantage you get from shorter/lighter cables may be largely
eaten up by heavier structure to hold the battery.

Hi Stan

I hope you read Joe Person's email.  Read it again.

As you have an O-235, you have a faint possibility of moving the battery out of the nose.
However I believe it is EXTREMELY unlikely to get the W & B correct with the battery in the
back.

Maybe you can if you weigh 200 lb yourself.   Anyway you have to get everything finished,
then do an ACCURATE W & B.   I did mine 5 times with changes each time.

Check with the local EAA chapter or the guys that race cars.  They may have electronic
scales as does the EAA chapter that I am in.

We lost a Longeze at Kanab about 15 years ago due to the "battery-in-the-back" idea.
Fortunately the guy survived.

What does a complete engine weigh?   I have 2 homebuilts (not canards) that need engines.

Hangar Flying / Re: Trailing Edge Fences.......WOW
« on: October 11, 2011, 07:41:08 AM »
NO, the efficiency is not the same because the wings of the Varieze slant backward
more.  Originally Burt said there was no noticeable effect on the Longeze.   Later he
decided to recommend trailing edge fences.  But they don't help (I am guessing
as my project has never flown) as much.

Stan, be cautious about selling that alternator; you may need it.

Have you done a CG?  WATCH out!

Is anyone who is REALLY expert helping you?  Are you in the CSA?  You need local help.

Hi Stan

As you are essentially starting from scratch on your wiring, consider the possibility that
you probably will go to electronic ignition and remove one magneto.  That gets rid of
one shielded wire but creates a need for one 12 V and one ground wire.    You also
might consider which side of the firewall the EI will be on.  Mine is in a cooler location,
just behind the passenger's head.   That creates a need for 4 sparkplug wires going through
the firewall, as well as wiring through the firewall to the sensor coils on the proximity
of the crankshaft.   The sparkplug and other wires are VERY well protected from the
cut edges of the firewall.

Also there are very inexpensive tachometers available.  My wiring does not have to go
through the firewall but does have to go up front to pilot and copilot.   Actually I
have 2 because the copilot has a partial panel AND control of the throttle, carb heat,
and mixture.
