Hangar Flying / Breaking down and towing
« on: March 30, 2006, 07:16:10 AM »
If you're going to take the plane off field and store it for 6 months or longer, then sure...good plan. Frequent wing removal/re-install in between short flying sessions is not really a practical option.

It is possible to remove the wings and re-install each in 15 min or less. It is fairly easy thing to do. But these operations should never be a race, and in reality take more time and care. 3 of us removed the wings off a Long Ez, not wasting any time, and it took about half an hour. There is fumbling and jiggling, push here, pull there, little more lift on the wing tip, , don't forget the antenna and strobe wires, etc. You don't want to forget and damage anything, especially on re-install.

You're close enough to the field to see how you're being tempted. With this plane, though, In My Honest Opinion, I think it would be a mistake.

Hangar Flying / Best prop for O-235L2C-LongEz

I'm still interested in this topic. Glenbob, have you been able to fly your Hertzler? Anyone else with Hertzler experience on their O-235?

Hangar Flying / Aircraft Cover
« on: February 05, 2006, 09:33:58 AM »
I've checked out both of the above websites. Different fabrics seem to be used by the vendors.  My need is not only for a "travel" cover, but also for a "storage" cover. If no hangar is available, I suppose full covers would be the next best option. I was wondering if anyone has tried any type of full covers?

Hangar Flying / Temperature output of carb heat muff
« on: January 11, 2006, 04:07:16 AM »
[/quote]I flew for years with the standard Rutan induction system with the round air cleaner on the firewall and had no carb icing problems (Cont engine). The ram air box has changed all that! Since I didn't have a carb temp gauge at that time, I can't compare carb temps.
My carb temp gauge is not calibrated, but at 40 deg F OAT at altitude the carb temp is about 12 deg C with full carb heat...two degrees above the caution range

Interesting comment. I did not realize that a ram airbox would exacerbate carb icing. I too would  like to hear commentary on this since it is a mod I will be considering.

Hangar Flying / Long Ez possibly in near future

Drew thanks for the lead on that enginesaver. I think I will try something like that.

Hi Drew. Very thoughtful post, above. As an aside, you mentioned something I've been pondering how to do for a while and am wondering what your scheme is.

There are many factory and expert accounts to the effect that the number one engine problem maker is crankcase moisture during idle periods. So, I've been wondering why no one yet has managed to "productize" something for keeping engines dry...conveniently. Short of filling the engine with preservative oil and using dehydrator plugs, there does not seem to be much else to do when the engine will be idle for 3 weeks or so every now and then.

Glad to hear that you pump dry air into the breather. 'Makes perfect sense. How exactly do you do this? How do you get your air dry to begin with?

Hangar Flying / cad templates for long nose mod are done look next one down

Hi Tony,

I was wondering what version of autocad you made your drawings with? I just discovered that older cad programs that used to import the .dwg files of their times will not not read the newer .dwg formats.

Way to go Tony. Can't wait to start looking at them later tonight. Thanks.

Hangar Flying / Best prop for O-235L2C-LongEz
« on: November 27, 2005, 07:41:57 PM »
I'm a little surprised there has been no data being volunteered so far. So many O-235 longs out there with so many props and nobody jotting down a little performance data....???

The Hertzler props are in the $1K region, I believe.

I would be interested in real world reports from any prop out there. The LongEz Owner's manual reports data using a Ted's 58" dia. x 72" pitch and a B&T 58 x 67. These props produced 161 Knots true @ 8,000, feet full (2840 RPM) throttle. Is anyone out there doing any better with an O-235 LongEz? The O-235 can only produce so much power, but prop efficiency significantly limits this power.

Hangar Flying / LEZ Basic Empty Weight
« on: November 23, 2005, 06:59:42 AM »
I looked at the starters in eBay. That was a good tip and am glad I found out about these starters.
I did get a hint somewhere else that the SkyTec starters are mechanically weak, often stripping the ring gear. This is supposedly due to the starter pinion not being supported on the outboard end like the original prestolites. The airboat starters are also not supported on both ends. They might be more rugged than the lighter Skytecs, though. Have they been working well for you?

From what I gathered from a very interesting engine/rpm discussion a while back in this forum, there was a person (Carolyn AKA Ez Oz?) that had fine tuned their prop to develop 2700RPM and 161Kts@ 8500' full throttle. The prop was something like a Henry 60" dia. x68-71 pitch...it wasn't real clear from the description.

Lately, the consensus seems to be that a Hertzler Silver Bullet is one of the finest props around today. Can anyone report there numbers with their props? Is 2650RPM and 158Kts @ 8500' commonly achievable?

dia.x pitch- static RPM- Cruise RPM- Cruise Kts @ altitude.

I need to save as much weight as I can. I knew about the B&C and Skytec starter alternatives for the O-232L2C. The Skytec is the lighter one of the two and seems to work well. I didn't know there was a Toyota Camry conversion. Would it be significantly lighter and less expensive than the Skytec?

Hangar Flying / Long Ez Autocad Templates
« on: November 19, 2005, 04:36:00 PM »
Tony,

That is great news. I may be getting a set of torn, folded, crumpled, used plans with a LongEz, but definately no templates. I feel deficient having plans without templates to accurately remake a replacement part and your drawings would be very appreciated.

About 1/16" tolerance...Your point is well taken. However, my gut feeling that plus/minus 1/32nd would be better. Some builders, I think, can use a thin cold wire saw around a formica template and that would produce more accurate cuts than a hacksaw. Just my opinion.

It would be good to have both the "original as drawn" and the "improved, mod'ed" versions of the templates. That would make it easier to judge if the improved drawing works in a given case or not.  Again, IMHO.

I would be using TurboCad. It can do more than I can and is very affordable. There might even be a free version somewhere.

Thanks.

Hey Drew,

In your post #140, way on top of this thread, did you mean to say that your your O-235 (and not the O-320) weighed 970 pounds? And if so, what was the resulting weight with the O-320 upconversion?

All of these responses to my inquiry have been exceptionally good food for thought. It sounds like the "heavy" will not be the tremendous dissapointment I thought it might be IF I don't mind sacrificing some climb rate. I can probably improve the situation by 20 pounds at least.
I'm glad there are several of you out there with heavier birds, but still satisfied. Thanks for speaking up.
I'll have to stick with an O-235. I think its all I can afford considering that  the spending won't stop with merely purchasing the plane. Lightweight starter, alternator, Electronic ignition, Ellison....
